How to make a USB JTAG programmer on the cheap for your coolrunner or similar.

After alot of searching ive found a DIY USB JTAG programmer, the original diagrams etc are in Japanese so ive translated everything into English to make it a little easier to understand

    You will need:
either a computer with an LPT port or a pic programmer.

    Parts you need:

    1x pic18F2550 microchip
    1x 28 pin dip socket
1x LPT connector **skip this if you have a pic programmer.
8x 1N4148 diodes **skip this if you have a pic programmer.
1x 220 ohm resistor **skip this if you have a pic programmer.
1x 47uF capacitor **skip this if you have a pic programmer.
    1x 12 mhz oscillator
    2x 100nF capacitors
    1x 1uF capacitor
    9x 100ohm resistors
    5x 200ohm resistors
    1x 1k resistor
    1x 10k resistor
    1x LED
1x USB port or cut up a usb cable.
    1x prototyping PCB

Schematic for the LPT pic programmer

After assembling the LPT programmer, install winpic800 (HERE) open it up and click Settings > Hardware and select ART2003 then click this icon and make sure your settings correspond with the below image.

then click apply then click setting (not settings..) and make sure your settings correspond with the blow image.

Now extract the folder from USB blaster.rar and from winpic800 click open and navigate to the usb blaster folder and select Blaster7SPI.hex then hit Device > program all. you are now ready to assemble the USB JTAG programmer.

here is the schematic for the jtag programmer

once you have assembled the jtag programmer, plug the usb cable into your computer and when it asks for the drivers select manually select drivers and point it to the driver folder within the usb blaster folder. once your drivers are installed you can proceed to connect it up to your coolrunner or other xilinx glitcher using the diagram below.

Now go into the release folder and open XP2 write select your JED file and program, Simples.

Its a little complicated and time consuming building it but hey, it beats paying $50+ for a programmer cable

Thanks for posting this but to be honest I would rather buy the damn $50 then assemble one.

    Hello,

You're telling me to use a PIC18F2550 but the diagram shows a PIC18F14k50.
The first one has 28 pins and the last one only 20.

How do I adapt the diagram to the 18F2550?

    Thank you!

    EDIT: Figured out by myself.
    Thanks anyway!

I hit the same question. How did you solve it? Which PIC did you take?
The dude who wrote this post still thinks that MS pressed a tighter groove on the XGD3-DVDs :-)

If you look both picture, you'll see each leg have refference that correspond to each other but not the same number.

    EX: VDD=20 VDD= 1

    Take the one on description

What does pin 15 on the 18F2550 connect to? The pinout says RC4/D-/VM
On the 18F14k50, RC4 and D- are separate pins, but on 18F2550 there is only pin 15.

Also should pin 17 on 18F2550 be used as RC3?

I think pin 15(RC4) = pin 6 on schematic usb
And pin 17 (RC6) = pin 8 on schematic usb

That's what I think if I see the reference picture in the description

I was looking at the 18f14k50 pinout in the schematic and the 18f2550 pinout here:

    Should this work?

    SSOP28 to DIP28

Re: How to make a USB JTAG programmer on the cheap for your coolrunner or similar.

I found this schematic on the sa89a website:

By looking at the pinouts, it looks like a PIC18F2550 is used. However, a capacitor value and the resistor values are different. MightyModz, did your programmer look like the above image or just use the same pins but the values of 100ohm,200ohm, etc?

    b3279,

The PIC18F14k50 is equivalent to PIC18F2550.
Both have the same pins. Use the 0.7 version but adapt the pins to the 18F2550. You can easily see what pin from PIC18F14k50 is what in PIC18F2550 by looking on the PIC18F2550 datasheet.

    Hope I helped!

PS: I can be corrected if I'm wrong! Thx!

Has anyone followed through and programed a coolrunner with one?

I would be interested in buying one if someone can put one together?

I sure I can knock one together but saves me a lot of time if you know what your doing and could part with 10 for it

i may look into building one. i have some spare pics here

i dont want to spam something thats not a tx product when there is a tx product for the job, but this was the common diagram for spi nand flasher for 360 using pic18f

as you can see. its very similar to this schematic in question.

i wasnt able to get the hex linked in the OPs post (version7) on my 2455..

version6 (which was appearantly designed for 2550) works as far as programming goes. device detected on my pc fine. now to wire it up.

Re: How to make a USB JTAG programmer on the cheap for your coolrunner or similar.

    Hi all,
I can i use the altera usb blaster cable with spartan 3an starter kit or there a something diffrent between cables for xilinx and altera?

No, an Altera USB cable is not supported by Xilinx SW, and is not a substitute for either a simple USB cable or a Xilinx USB Platform Cable.
this is a dead end. look at the schematic. how do you wire it to a xilinx coolrunner?
    nCE?
    nStatus?
    nCS?

Xilinx uses 3.3v, GND, TCK, TDO, TDI and TMS.

I think this isnt going anywhere.
