I got my X3 yesterday and tried to install it today after printing out the X3 install tutorial. I have a 1.0 box so the lpc holes are filled with solder. I am using a 30w iron to heat it and it melts but the solder sucker is not working properly. Do I just need a smaller tip on the sucker, desoldering braid, or wire install? Thanks for any help.

It would probably easier to use a wire install

Do not go for the wire install, I've done both (although my xbox still frags ), and the pin header install is much easier. The best way to do it, if you don't have any de-soldering braid, is to get a very thin wire (like a picture hanging wire or similar) and have it in the hole. Heat it with your iron and push down. This should cause the solder to

1) Get out of the hole.
2) Fall down around the soldering point.

If both of these happen, all you have to do it push in the LPC and heat up the solder that is still around the hole. :D

I think the best way to do it is to prop that side of your mobo up a little so you can get underneath it easily and pull up a chair. load your solder sucker and set it to the hole on the top (actually pressing against the board, not just above the hole)...then touching the solder with your iron from underneath until you see it melt - which should be quickly with your 30w iron...then just *click*. Worked very nicely for me on two installs.

I used the desoldering braid and that worked really well.. I was somewhat surprised how easy it was. I put the braid over the hole, then put the soldering iron tip over the braid and pushed it through the braid into the whole. This caused the solder to suck into the braid.

The solder sucker may be even easier but this is all I had at the time.

I tried braid, which usually works very well for me, but it didn't work in this case. I propped the board up vertically and used a solder sucker on one side and the iron on the other. Even with that it took two or three tries for a couple of the holes.

If you use Telexen's method (horizontal instead of vertical) I'd recommend putting the iron on top and the sucker on the bottom--let gravity give you a hand.
