1.0 X3 Install, Would greatly appreciate any and all help!

Um. First off it's a 1.0 xbox and I'm trying to install a X3 with the pin header install method. I installed as normal and when I booted I FRAGed. So I tried to disable the mod and It booted the MS dash fine. So I concluded my D0 was fine. So I went and re-soldered my pins and I still fraged. So we took it apart again and tested with a ohm meter and every thing looked fine. As far as I can tell the soldering is fine. I used a magnetic screw driver on the install job and didn't know if that would have caused the bio's to get deleted thus causing the FRAGing. I noticed the pin headers weren't level so I went back and fixed that and still no luck. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in Advance. (I know someone will say check your soldering so I will go ahead and do that right now. :D !

P.S.---...I have noticed that everyone is having the same problem!!! Has anyone ACTUALLY fixed this issue?

The "fix" almost always turns out to be resoldering.

Your chip hasn't been shorted, has it?

Unless you used a ridiculously powerful magnetic screwdriver, I would highly doubt this would ever happen.

I noticed the pin headers weren't level so I went back and fixed that and still no luck.
So now you're sure that all of the pinheaders are in the x3?

What would cause a short...the pins were never hooked up wrong. BTW...This is his dad...I have re-soldered this #@&*@*# thing 3 times. I also checked it with my ohm meter and everything zero'ed out. I have tried everything from tilting the chip to pushing down on it.I also reset the depth of the pins to the proper depth..Still nothing!!

So you didn't have any problems desoldering the holes on the board? Just wondering, because I had a problem with this, however since you can boot to the m$ dash, I doubt this is your problem...

If the pins were pushed to different heights then I'm assuming some got pushed down...they may have shorted against the metal shielding in the case if you put the mobo back in. You'll see burn marks on the back of the X3 chip if it did short - and if it did short, don't worry, it can be fixed easily

No, I can't see any burn marks on the back of the X3. I did not have any solder braid or flux so I got creative. I heated up the solder and then hit it with a powerful shot of air from my air compressor. Blew them straight out without a single problem. Took me like 30 seconds. I'll take a picture of my solder job and post it if I can figure out how to! What about the remote. I have the remote that clips underneath. Do any of the buttons have to be pressed in for it to boot the bios?

no buttons have to be pressed. however, i would try booting to the backup bios to see what happens. Just in case you didn't know, you can boot to it by pressing the power and eject buttons at the same time to turn the xbox on.

This is the best pic I could get.
I have already tried to boot from back up and it still FRAGed.

honestly, that looks like kind of a crappy solder job. there should be minimal solder around the pins, and definatley not as far away as you have on some of them. (for example the top and bottom far left pins.) also check to see if when you used the compressed air to blow the solder out, it didn't splash elseware on the mobo. oh and it does look like you scorched your mobo a bit there

Way too much solder on those LPC points. Quite a few "seem" to be crosslinked by the solder in multiple places where they connect multiple trace lines.

dude! damn youre killing that xbox, anyways ive done over 13 xboxes and to be honest there's no need for the pinheader on a 1.0 ,i know by experience, the wire install is a walk inthe park and its easy to follow now that being said you just gotta make sure you have the right bios for the xbox version good luck ... ive done 1.0's 1.2's 1.4's 1.6's never had a problem, now i install and make some bucks

that my friend, is a great example of what not to do when soldering your lpc

notice the huge blobs of solder spanning several traces......the dull luster of the solder....tsk tsk.

just use some desoldering braid on top of them, and if you do resolder them entirely, use a small diameter of solder.......

Thanks for the replies. I'll go try to resolder with less solder. Do you think that if I can't get this to work I should try the solderless adapter?

honestly, i think that the lpc bus is farked, be very careful and don't keep the iron on it too long, the traces already look scorched, if they're not fried already, they are very close. be very very careful, otherwise there is a good possibility of having to buy a new box

OH AND TRY TO SCRAPE THE SOLDER OFF OF THOSE TRACES. it will help a lot. you are conecting the chip to other parts of the mobo when you splash. get some 0.022 solder it helps.

also get a trace writer pen to fix those traces. cuz yo parents wont be too happy about bying a new frikin box. and if ya do screw it up send me all the parts for spare or maybe i can rebuild the box to almost new working condish. :!: you have desecrated a sacred item if you mess up the xbox.

BTW... What diameter solder are you guys using to do this. I just picked up some .015 gauge so I hope that will do the job. I also got a solder sucker so no more air commpressor!
