I'm currently in the process of putting an X3 into my 1.6. The first part was easy (pin header) but after D0 it all goes down hill. The wires play a large part in it. I was using wires i pulled off the pin header from the wire install. Those suck because they aren't solid cored (meaning one big wire, vs. many little ones "spun" to a core). That being the case they tend to "unspin" themselves and can cause shorts or bridges with other connections, or the WORST thing..... You FINALLY get it soldered in place but like 3 strans of the wire aren't soldered down, free to touch other connectors.
I found the perfect solution, the perfect wires.
Take a CAT5e cable that you don't use (or a friend's that he does use  ) cut a section out of it about 4 inches long. Take the noncondusive rubber wrapper off the 4 inch strip and you will have PLENTY of solid-cored wires perfect for a D0 or a LPC rebuild project. You even have all the different colors if you're that picky.
Hope that helps someone, it sure as heck saved me some time and agrivation.
