1.6b formated x3 chip into 1.4/5 xbox

i just recently aquired a 1.4 or 1.5 xbox... and i have an x3 that i just ripped out of my 1.6b i wanted to put in my 1.5
but when tis in it wont work... and wont let me get to the flash menu
is this for the same reason it wouldnt in my 1.6b? (b4 i fixed it)
i just need to soft mod and hotswap the chip on?
