1.6b X3ce problems with controller

I installed the Xecuter 3ce successfully. I turn on xbox and get to Flashbios
3.0.3 but I cannot navigate using the controller. My controller does work
with games though so I know it is not the controller. I need some info or direction
on what to do or check out next.
I have a M$ controller that came with the xbox. I do not won a DVD dongle thing and am looking for an alternative to try before purchasing it.

Go to GameStop and buy one of the old controllers (the big ones), the 1.6b has to use the older flash bios, and it doesn't have drivers for the S type controllers.

They have old style controllers?? I guess I wouldn't know. This is the first console that I owned since PS1 about 6 years ago and I just got this one for christmas. How do I know it is an older style>> what does it look like??

DVD DONGLE WORKS!!!

I broke down and went to game stop and bought a used DVD Dongle. IT WORKED!!!!!!! UNFREAKINBELIEVABLE!!!!
