The original is working and 1 backup out of 3 is so I guess the firmware is flased ok but now I have a bad media\laser issue

what media are you useing.

i no i had a benq that would play retail fine,and play the odd one or two backups.but it turn out to be laser.

The discs are poor, had nothing but coasters with them. I might even try to put the old laser back in and see what its like.
