2.6CE on 1.0 questions

I've installed a 2.6 CE onto a 1.0 box. Did a wire install. I have good soldering skills but still a blank screen. I am able to switch mod off and boot to original MS. I'll go over the joints, traces and plug connections but I have 2 questions.

What is the purpose of point D0?

I've seen a couple of tutorials that display pics of jumpers on the underside of the board. The jumpers appear to take the place of the overlay module (can't remember what it's called). Are those jumpers/or module only for a V1.6 install?

Thanks to all who contribute to the forum.

D0 is the point that tells the Xbox to look at the LPC bus on boot to find the BIOS instead of using the one on the motherboard. This is a must for your chip to work. I assume the overlay you ask about is the LPC rebuild. (here's a pic - http://www.themodchip.com/PhotoDetails.asp?ShowDESC=N&ProductCode=LPC) This rebuild or the manual adding of wires between points is for 1.6+ Xboxes only as MS started disabling bits of the LPC socket that are required for a mod.

Let's step back and take a look at what you've done so far... you've installed the chip and when booting with the mod enabled there is nothing on screen, disabled you still get the MS BIOS. No FRAGs (Flashing Red And Green on the eject LED) on either, right?. This is good, it shows you haven't screwed up the motherboard (stock still works) and your D0 point is good (with mod enabled it does something different). If your install was bad, with the chip enabled you would get a FRAG.

Have you tried switching the chip to the other bank and booting? Have you seen the FlashBIOS screen at all? Verify that the plugs of the external switch cable are securely seated, sometimes they can bow a bit if not inserted with even pressure and not make full contact.

Yes.

No. Mod enabled=FRAG.

This is good, it shows you haven't screwed up the motherboard (stock still works) and your D0 point is good (with mod enabled it does something different).
Then it's an install problem. I've seen in other threads that this is relatively common and the cause could be solder joints, bridges, open traces, etc. One person reported a bad connection if plug was completely seated and only worked if it was partially unplugged, so he glued it in position.
I left the tag ends of the wire under the board a little long in case I needed to solder jumpers in. Now that I know no jumpers are necessary for v1.0, I will clip the wires closer to the board.
I will check the traces and joints as well.
Thanks.

I would lean more towards open traces or solder joints, since I think bridges would be likely to cause a FRAG while still booting the MS BIOS. May not always happen tho. Depending on just how far the wires extend below the motherboard you could be shorting against the sheild. Unless you stripped more insulation from the wire than what Xecuter strips when manufactured you shouldn't have come close to the sheild at all.

There is some good information on LPC testing in the link in my sig. Check it out if you can't spot any visible problems.

Checking voltage readings 'cause I haven't found any opens, etc.
I get 0V on pin 1 (black), using pin 2 (brown) as common.
LPC diagnostic text states pin 1 should be .2V. What is the nature of pin 1 - LCLK?

I'll check other pins in reference to pin 1. Looks like it is at ground potential.

It's after midnight here and success has just arrived!

I decided to reconstruct and install the pin header after a wire from the adapter broke at the board for the second or third time. I didn't find any open traces and the board looked surprisingly good after all of the soldering/desoldering I've done in the last couple of days.

Anyway, got it together, powered-up and saw the mod screen for the first time. Then promptly powered down and am now going to bed.

Thanks again to Whoopin and all contributors.:)
