Not at the same time, no.

The limitations are set by the Xbox. You only have 1 IDE channel so you can only have two devices. The Xbox wouldn't even see a 2nd HDD even if you disconnected the DVD-ROM and put it in it's place.

LOL, you couldn't even fit two HDDs in the box, without taking out the DVD drive, which kinda makes it pointless. If youre afraid of getting banned and want your original in there as well as your bigger HDD just get the Xtender, you can have 3 harddrives and the DVD ROM drive.

the Xtender is basically a bigger case with a switch in it. The switch allows you to change what harddrive the Xbox reads from. No you woulnt get banned assuming you dont have your mod chip on.

O ya and if you have signed onto Live before you upgraded your harddrive and then upgraded it, you risk getting banned, it records you hard drive number the first time you sign onto Live, and reads it every time afterward, soooooo.... have the original hard drive(the one you signed onto live for the first time) set as the first hard drive in the Xtender, and the others as 2 and 3. Hope that all makes sence.

Im not sure, but you would have that hole in the front of the case, and you obviously cant play DVDs. Try it, I dont think it can hurt.

I'd suggest you do some hard reading before buying an x-tender. Many are having major problems with them. My first went well, but the next three were total nightmares.

I just tried a fifth for a friend last night... I wasted 6 hours on that thing, only to end up putting everything back together without it. I tried avery possible combination with the 200gig drives, with and without the oem drive. I did the same with the old x-tender cable. Nothing would work properly, so I put it all back together with his old wd 250G. Now I've gotta tell him he wasted $350 (x-tender, 2 WD 200G, parts for custom UDMA cable).

After this, I'm totally fed up. Next time I need to open my xbox, the x-tender is going in the trash. I'd rather have only one drive than have to explain to every customer why I won't install them.

<edit>
The facts:
X-tender= $59.95 USD
Proper cable= $25.00 USD
Additional HDD= about $125 USD
Total = $209.95 USD (plus shipping)
New Xbox for XBL= $149.95 USD
</edit>

It's cheaper to buy a virgin xbox for live use.....

actually it is very possible to have two drives in one box. to tell you the truth, there is room underneath the dvd drive for a second HD. there is one guy at xbox-scene who has created an xbox with room for four HD's that's right, i said FOUR!

I agree, the Xtender is a total POS. I installed one for a friend's brother. Not only did one of the connectors on the flimsy IDE cable come off of the cable, making it so that you could have only 3 drives connected (including the DVD-ROM), but the power switch kept shorting out so we had to do some troubleshooting, soldering, taping and insulating to get it to properly switch power between the two drives we had connected. Finally, one of the extending bolts wasn't threaded inside so you couldn't screw the stock screw in.

All in all, NOT something I'd be thrilled to have paid good money for, and a HUGE pain in the ass. Plus, again, it looks pretty ridiculous.

To this day we ask the guy I installed it for how he likes his coXtender.

Didn't Xecuter say they were coming out with their own solution for this? I don't know timelines (I'm sure none were provided) but if you're a patient soul you might want to wait for that. Doubtless it'd be better quality, more aesthetically pleasing, and perhaps there might be a tie-in with the X3 (total speculation there).

As far as cramming multiple drives into a non-xtended box, yeah I saw it and he had to do a huge amount of dremeling to make it happen. Also, I'd be concerned about issues like thermal dissipation. It's an interesting proof of concept, but I suspect it'd be awful to have to assemble, especially if you're not very familiar with a dremel.

I'd suggest just buying another stock box for live.

(Edited to fix grammar mistakes.)

Stay away from Xtender, there products are cheap and they are trying to take credit for having the EL wire! Two drives in the box is a possibility, however will never work with out a switch, and you don't need a dvd drive if you plan on using it via ftp, which in my case is a much better idea, i use my drive maybe once every 5 months. A little bit of bondo, sand paper and alot of patients and you can make the case look like it never came with a dvd drive!.

I've wondered about putting a laptop drive in as the "backup" drive, and using the existing drive for XBL. Unfortunately, the cost of a 80GB 2.5" HDD is about the same as buying a second Xbox, and a large HDD for the chipped box.

Not worth the cost or effort. Maybe someday :)

basically if you want more than 1 hard drive in your xbox either find a way to squeeze another hard drive in or wait for team xecuters version of the xtender

Wow this is a hot topic!

Hears why and what I have done.

I chipped a friends 1.6 for a Christmas present he gave to his daughter.

The day after Boxing Day he rang me to say that no DVDs would play. He brought it round and I had a look. It turned out that the DVD rom had died. As it was Christmas, and his girl would be upset, I replaced his Samsung DVD for one I had in one of my Xbox’s.

Now Because I was DVD less, I thought I would try to fit a hard drive where the DVD was. After some experimentation I found out that if I put a switch on just the RED wire, which is +5v I believe, I could switch between the drives with just a simple toggle switch.

Then I had to prep the second hard drive on another Xbox (the DVD died remember) Then once I had evox on it - the world was my oyster.

This works a treat. There seems to be room for another too, so I might fit another (will require a new switch).

So far the only issue I have is that the power light flashes green all the time.

Things to do.

Fix the flashing light
Fit 2 Leds so I know what drive I have booted.
Fit another hard drive.

Any coments on the red +5v way of switching ?

Looking for help

I was thinking of starting a website kind of like IGN....but better. lol. Anywho i am looking for some volunteers and thought this might be a good place to post and see if anyone was interested. If so just post or pm and let me know what you could do to help. for now i think it will be mainly focused on game reviews. So some unbiased ppl to do reviews would be the greatest help.
