I have a Switch with Firmware 3.0.1

SX OS 1.3 CFW boots up fine

SX OS 2.5 CFW boots up fine

Installing Emunand with SX OS 2.5 to my "Samsung 265GB Evo Select" sd card and trying to boot on that only produces the Nintendo logo for a moment, then a black screen for 30+ minutes. I've tried reformatting the SC card multiple times and moving the files on/off, as well as both doing a hidden and folder version of the emunand, and none of those will boot.

My Switch still doesn't have the SDXC update installed (the one to allow high capacity exFat SD cards). Is this what the problem is? My Switch has never been connected to wifi/internet at all before, but when it sees the exFat SD, it prompts for a system update.

1. Is the SDXC system update "onboard", i.e. is it already in the Switch and it can update without connecting to the internet? I ask because the Switch seems aware of its existence without ever having been online.

2. Does the SDXC update burn an efuse? If not, can I simply backup the Switch's original NAND and be able to restore it to a state where it has no way of knowing the SCSX update was ever done?

Thank you for the help, I've been working on this for 6 hours straight today and no luck.

If you do not have the exfat driver you cannot use SD cards that are formatted exfat. Your options are:

1. Use fat32
2. Update officially to a newer firmware which will install exfat support, but also burn your fuses
3. Follow the guide below to update offline and not blow your fuses so you could downgrade in the future if needed, though it is not recommended. You can also look into emunand.

4. Look into using emunand and then use the above guide to update the emunand

I see, thank you. I reformatted the SD card as Fat32 and now SX OS 2.5 Emunand is working correctly. I'll attempt to update the emunand with ChoiDujour then revert back to exFat and see how that goes.

Update, I used Choi to update the Emunand to 6.2, then I shut down, backed up the SD card, reformatted it from Fat32 to exFat, dragged the contents of the backup on to the SD card again, booted back up and it is working great, original system boots into 3.0.1 still, and Emunand boots into 6.2. My backup of SSBU is working great.

Glad that worked. You should be able to keep your sysnand the same going forward now and just update your emunand going forward.

Out of curiosity what are the benefits of keeping your sysnand on a lower firmware?

My Switch came with 3.0 and I've been using ReiNX up to 6.2, but I do have the ability to downgrade back to 3.0.

I've just ordered the SXOS and dongle as I was planning on giving Emunand a go to have a single console for online play (sysnand) and CFW, mods etc (emunand). But obviously that would require sysnand to be on 6.2 so want to know the benefits of keeping a lower firmware.

No burnt eFuses so you can upgrade EmuNAND and return to lower CFW/OFW if you mess something up.

Example: OFW 6.2 came out and we had to wait quite a bit before Team Xecuter managed to get SX OS to be compatible with 6.2
if you burn eFuses, you can't downgrade.

As of right now mostly what Sephirot said. There are people holding out for a cold boot mod thinking it will only be available on lower firmwares like other consoles, but that won't be known until it's released.

Cheers for the info, chaps.

Would I be right in thinking that I could just use that Choi program to upgrade both my sysnand and emunand and keep fuses intact, then I'd be able to take my sysnand online and potentially downgrade again in future?
Obviously there's always a risk of ban but I'm not overly bothered if it does happen.

You potentially could do that. Not really sure what Nintendo looks for when you connect online. Some people say they have played for months online IN cfw and not get banned, while others it happens instantly. If it some how is looking at fuses it will know you didn't update officially. Best route, but also not cheap if you really want to play any games online, get another switch. Doesn't have to be new of course. S

I actually have another Switch already that's sat in a box. But figured that if a banned Switch would effectively be the same as a Switch that I'm forced to keep offline then I may as well give it a blast and see what happens. Nothing lost, y'know?

I hear ya. My original switch is all official in the off chance I find a game I want to play online. Bought another one for the sole purpose of modding and if it gets banned, it gets banned. It's always connected to the net, just don't go out of my way to connect to ninty servers.
