360 Intermittent 3 Red Lights

My 360 has decided to freeze during games recently. About a week ago i had taken it apart to upgrade my xtreme firmware from 4 to 5.2. About 2 days ago it decided to freeze on me about 10mins in after starting it up from cold having successfully played on it for a few hours the night before.

My next thought was crap here we go and sure enough i pressed the power button off then on and the 3 red lights showed up. I then cycled the power button again only for the console to boot up and into the game. Since then it has playing fine then freezing. Crackdown is one of the main games in which it freezes on pretty quickly, like 10mins where as virtua tennis 3 can last maybe 30 mins, i even had it going for 50mins yesterday.

I then decided to stand the console up, just basically because i will try anything to stop the red lights so i can play my games. It seemed to be more successful for a while, i played gears and probs, but after that other games started freezing on it again.

I was wondering if there is anything i can do to it while its in this middle stage of playing not playing, before i think it will ultimately succumb to the 3RL. I do not want to have to try the heat gun trick on it, its a pain in the arse for me. I read recently about the x clamps and the success' people have been having with it, i wondered if maybe i just loosened the screws on the heat sinks that maybe, though i know they're will be an increase in heat that it will work for a long period of time and the heat might actually help put the CPU or GPU make better contact with the board. Any replys appreciated

The screws dont actually tighten the heat sinks, it simply connects and grounds them to the outer stamped shell. The actual retainters on the bottom are what hold the heatsinks and apply the pressure.

I think you have a failing gpu console. It may go on and off like it has been but sooner or later it will probably be a complete gpu failure.

ok thanks, i should have realised that when i posted, as i have taken apart the 360 few times, lapse of memory :)

it seems to work alot better standing up, i just played virtua tennis for about an hour with no freezes.

yea most times consols play better when they are standing up because the cd can spin better due to gravity. i seen videos on youtube showing how the three red lights/failing gpu console of doom can be fixed for a while. overheating the console with towls
