As a victim of the very well known Rrod and overheating etc,I have decided to try and safe guard my financial side of things and the Xbox slims life.
Now i know the slim has reportedly cut down on the heat output side of things but as i like to "hammer" my console when i get time ( after work etc ) i have noticed it does indeed get rather hot after 2-3 hours of online play. It reaches on average 54.8c after monitoring it for a week that is the general average temp i have seen.
Now i have opened the xbox already ready for the flashing side of things so warranty is NOT a issue for me.
I have looked around the "tinterwebz" and noticed a few people have decided to up the fan speed by cutting and soldering to 5v and 12 points . . . That is far to dodgey for my liking so all i did was cut the blue and yellow cable to achieve the speed increase and therefor increased heat dissipation. ( Well in theory :p )
The bottom picture is how the xbox 360 fan is wired:

So far so good, By hand it feels a damn site cooler,My friend has pinched the ir gun for the weekend.
As per the old console it has gotten noticeably louder But only as loud as it would be if you were playing games directly off the disk so pretty good still.

Now i have a few q's some of you rather large brained lot may help me with :)

1.) I understand the stock fan is around 93mm's Could i in theory buy a 90mm fan and whack it it?
2.) If i were to attach a potentiometer or a device to controll speed at any given time what would it be and how?

Ld.

Good idea man, I have soldered to the 12v connections before and blew an old RRoD box up in doing so. I never thought to simply cut the control wire. I have to wonder though if this wouldn't set off one of the billion security checks and flag you for ban.

Any masters care to weigh in on this issue?

I doubt it will trigger ms's swat team at all :0)
Its a built in function, all the blue and yellow cables do are scenes the cpu's temp and adjust the speed accordingly, with both wires cut the xbox "thinks" the fans and off so it ramps up the speed to 12v.
Of course i kept the cables stripped and electrical taped around tips for future use and to protect from shorts etc . . .

I have noticed that my slims put out alot of heat and I believe that is the point. Better that it comes out of the xbox than stay inside, so I believe the fan is doing its job just fine.
Yeah i understand thats the fans job but, There has been many cases of overheating already as quoted on some posts on this forum and others . . .
I personaly have had mine crash and freeze many times since christmas when i purchased it, But as its opened now i have no warranty so ill justr wait and or take precautions to safeguard me and my console.

As it is only a few people have reported the slims as being "hotter" or "crashing " etc . . .
BUT as with any thing electrical and from M$ its a lottery.
Heating up exsessively "may" be an issue and a factor to the crashing freezing etc, But again it hangs on sooo many variables like length of gameplay,Ambient rooms temp,If you are or are not playing from disk,Ventilation etc . . . . So many factors.
Just have ta wait n see i suppose. . . .:(

Good ta know we have another M$ Pandemic lmao!!!
I understand the fans job is to repel heat, But the slim puts out more heat than my previous Jasper. . . .

yep, it runs way hotter than my jasper. ive also seen a few slims with open tray already. now to just get a supply of slim drives.
Thats my other thought, Could it be the new touch panel?
Any whoo i plan on buying a few slim consoles as backup.
Better be prepared lol.

Mine runs pretty dang hot as well. I'm probably going to bump my fans up to max as well to try to prevent some RRoD problem(s).

I've had that problem with when playing games too. It does some times say it cannot read disk and other times it just quits to a black screen, frozen causing me to restart. Thats usually after one and a half hour to about two hours

Got a small idea, other then clipping the control wires... seeing as the slim has a couple USB ports on it, would a cooling mat for like a laptop have any effect you think?

May be a worthwhile check for those that have a laptop cooling mat or access to one, I have to wait to get a new mat... sent mine to my brother in law for now
