Hey people, got my xbox, 120gig WD hdd, and xecuter 3 is in the mail, should be here today or tomorrow.
Just want to run a few final things thru u guys incase i have something wrong:

1) Install the modchip as per diagrams from the 1.6 tutorial.
2) Flash the chip to upgrade the bios
3) Install Evolution-X
4) Replace hard drive & lock it.

Do I need to prepare the hard drive somehow, like format it before putting it in the xbox? Or just take it out of the bag and install it. Has not been used yet.

Manufacture date is 07-28-04, I'm assuming that's 1.6?

Thanks guys, I know it's frustrating with first time modders, but gimme a hand if you can. Peace.

As far as I know (haven't upgraded my HDD yet), you can just put the HDD in when you put the mod chip in. You can use X3CL to partition and format the drive. Nothing needs to be done to the drive before putting it in the Xbox. It would be kind of silly to install Evox then replace the HDD now wouldn't it? Then you would just be installing it all over again.

Before you do anything to the hdd, backup the contents of your old drive via ftp.

So....

1. Install x3
2. Flash with x3 bios.
3. Test
4. Backup old drive.
5. Put in new drive.
6. Format new drive using x3 bios.
7. Install your dash. (I prefer XBox Media Center :)

Do I need that DVD2XBOX thing installed in order to back games up, or can the X3 bios just do it?

Also, with Evo-X, will it allow me to play DIVX movies, mpg files, avi files, xvid, etc?

What's so good about the media center?

How are you installing evox?

If you use slayers autoinstaller, that will install most of the apps you will need and the dashes too

If you want an easy life download a copy of the Slayer 2.6 installer. Then you just pop in your X3, flash the bios, pop in the slayer disc, back up your HD and EEPROM info, FTP it back to your PC for safe keeping, pop in your new HD and let the Slayer disc do the rest... It will sort your HD and put on evox dash and loads of other homebrew stuff (eg, ability to save games to the HD and play DVD's without dongle).

Lasy mans tool but if you are just modding a box as a 1 off it works great..

Wow great, this is exactly what I wanted to know!

1 more noob question. Do I need an internet connection to FTP? Or can I just take a stand alone computer w/ a network card (which is not connected to the net) and connect a network cable to the XBOX and connect via FTP that way?

You dont need an internet connection, if you have a router use a normal patch cable to connect your xbox to the router.

If you want to connect your xbox to your pc network card, then you will need a cross over cable

Well yeah, to respond to Jzor, he would obviously need to backup his HDD if he had anything on it, but judging from him saying "got my xbox" I figured he just got a new xbox and had nothing on it. If you do have something on it then yes, you would need to backup. Otherwise is there any reason to backup your original files Jzor? I wouldn't think so.

Yes, you are going to want to back up the original MS dashboard files.

You can get those from a game or even some movies. Any other reason? I'm not trying to be a pain hehe, I'm just trying to think of scenarios since I haven't actually upgraded the HDD in my xbox.

Rule of thumb is that you should back up your original HD and EEPROM data as soon as possible after you mod your box.... Get it FTP'd to your PC and even burn it to a disc for safe keeping.... This is critical info if your modding shenanagans go to rat poo... I believe the info is unique to the box..

Yeah, I know the EEPROM info is unique, but I wasn't sure if any of the files on the HDD were or if it was just the dashboard which you can get off of a game.

Hey Hung....We must have been typing at the same time.... LOL Great minds and all that! :)
The "great minds" quote is fine, but is only part of the quote ...

Great minds think alike ... but fools never differ.

Wish I knew who that came from.

It may be possible to find the original xbox data somewhere.... however i don't think you can get a complete copy from any game or movie.

Honestly it is just best practice to do the backup.

PS. XBMC makes the best dash. :)

Oh I know you're better safe then sorry. I was just trying to gather some info on if there was anything you HAD to backup. I know you can get the entire msdash from a game like Halo 2, didn't know if there was anything else, I'm not at my xbox right now so I couldn't look at a file list.

Also, I agree, XBMC is the only dash there is that's worth using :D.

With that Slayers installer thing, will it allow me to play DIVX and mpg and avi files and whatnot? Or am I better off using XBMC?
