About to purchase NAND-X; a few questions first

Hi,

I'm looking to JTAG my console myself, and came across the NAND-X. I have read some tutorials and looked around quite a bit, but there are still a few things unclear to me. I hope someone can help me with these questions.

  • The console I want to apply it to currently runs dashboard version 7359 (something like that, out of my head, not 7371 at least). Is that OK or is it easier/better/smarter/ to upgrade to 7371 first?
  • If I understand correctly at this point this is the process in a nut shell: a) read NAND b) write Xell c) obtain CPU-key and write Freeboot. Now, at which point do you use the switches on the JTAG QSBs that come with the NAND-X?
  • When using the pin headers, does just using desolder braid to clear the points do the trick? So just 'open up' the contacts and plug in the headers & go? If correct, isn't that much easier than using the QSBs
  • Is it possible to remove the QSBs after completing NAND-read/write/JTAG-portion? Just a matter of desoldering them from the motherboard again? I presume you can only do that 2-3 times before you render the QSB unusable, am I right?
  • How big of a problem is it that the console I want to apply the JTAG to has no DVD drive and no HDD (I plan on using an USB HDD) anymore? I understood installing Freestyle Dash can be a problem, but is there anything more? I was thinking I could just take a drive from another Xbox, flash it just for installing Freestyle Dash, and flashing it back again to the Xbox I took it from if I have to...

Again, I'm really new to this, so I'm sorry if my questions seem stupid :p

Thanks in advance.

  • If you can update to the 7371 then do and move onto the JTAG process but in my opinion it's not necessary. I've jtagg'ed many consoles from 6717 and 7357 dash to Freeboot dash 9199 straight forward.
  • The switches on the JTAG QSB needs to be on for xell and freeboot to work. The other resistor switch only needs to be changed if the default position doesn't work but there is no fixed value, different settings work with different consoles.
  • Personally soldering the QSB or wires directly onto the board is much easier than using the pin headers. Not to mention the number of consoles people sent me after they ruined the NAND & jtag points trying to install the pin headers.
  • Yes you can remove the QSB and reuse them but the JTAG part has to remain on else the console will not boot correctly and you'll end up with E79 error message.
  • Having no DVD drive is not of a problem at all, you can use a USB stick and once you got xexmenu running you can FTP files between your PC and the 360.
