LITEON DG-16D4S - SLIM advice for firmware mod..thanks

need some advice, please, thinking of attempting the firmware mod myself on my xbox im a complete n00b to this..(bare with me)

so i stripped xbox down last night..

i have the liteon dg-16d4s / fw:9504

dashboard 2.0.14699.0

i have been reading the step by step tutorial by ubergeek, great! very informative but have noticed it is slightly old..

so i have a couple of questions

has firmware in my drive been updated with the latest dash update or what tutorial do i refer too??,

does that mean the latest dashboards have write protected the drive..

do i need an unlocked pcb?

what tools do i need to purchase i noticed the ck3 pro is no longer available?..

i want to go easiest straightforward route as im a complete n00b to this, but want to have a go myself :)

i want to use x360usb pro
and the external molex as i have a laptop just atm


i dont really want to do any soldering if i can help it.. so does that mean i should buy the unlocked pcb board for my drive?

basically im just lookin a recommended shopping list and what i'll need for the job! / and what tutorial i refer to with latest dashboard update..

any help greatly appreciated guys,

Get an X360USBPro and CK3 Mini for now. Follow the JF tutorial to get the dummy.bin from the drive.

Once you know what the SPI is, go from there.

(You could open the drive and check the chip but the above is a far better way).

The SPI is the part which holds the firmware. It'll either be MXIC or Winbond. Once you know which, you can decide on what to do.

thanks martin, up to spec with ya now, found a few more posts..

so is there anyway to tell if the SPI chip is WINBOND orr MXIC without opening the drive and looking at the numbers on the chip?

get ya! bit slow on the uptake i am *doh* :)

ck3 mini /usbpro getting ordered tomorrow when i get paid! so should have the key in a week and know what chipset is it and take it from there.

any recommendations on who to get my bits and pieces off. was just gonna use mrmodchips.co.uk ?

Just a quick thanks to everyone who posted here steering me in the right direction.. in particular Martin C who recommended the ck3mni and usbpro for me..brilliant bit of kit! well chuffed with it. Also ubergeek for tutorials and all the brilliantly talented individuals that make the hardware/software available to us.

went for the tx pcb as it was simplest (n00b) route for me, as i had the winbond chip in the stock pcb it, so i installed it yesterday and flashed and tested/verified rebuilt xbox last night, and is happily playin my backups. :)
