RGH After Demon Mini USB Device not recognized (RGH Coolrunner still fine)

So, I've just installed a Demon into my Phat Falcon which has been RGH'd (with a Coolrunner Rev. B) for a few months now. I used the micro-USB to test the Demon prior to install etc... All was fine. I like to think I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, though some may disagree. Plenty of SMD work, been installing modchips for years, etc...

Where I stand, I can still boot my RGH Nand when I switch off the Demon from the front panel (blue LED's off), but whenever I connect a Mini USB to try and Read/Write Nand's or apply the new XSFV files to the CR, both JRunner and Demon Toolbox cannot detect the device. It is plugged in, blue lights on the front are lit up... Demon switched to XB, CR set to NOR. I've tried re-seating the ribbon cables to no avail, as I read solved the problem for some others.

Pictures are attached to demonstrate the setup / soldering. One thing I'm wondering is if I need to de-solder the Nand-X QSB that is still on the mobo from the original RGH and CR install.

Images are in the gallery linked below (available to be blown up in higher res. too)

Does this need to get de-soldered?

Thanks in advance.

The QSB points on the Demon are nowhere near good enough. it's possible you have a short somewhere on the Demon itself which is why it's not detected.

Either drastically improve the soldering or send it to someone who can.

So having the QSB from the Nand-X shouldn't be causing any issues? I'll touch up the soldering tonight and see if that fixes anything, but under a very fine jeweler's scope I'm not seeing any bridged connections or shorts (though the solder globs may be a bit excessive for such small traces

The NAND-x QSBs are just breakout boards for easier connection and won't affect anything else.

Do you get any Windows notification that the DemoN has been connected? Anything in Device Manager? Have you tried another USB cable?

Just trying to eliminate the easiest stuff first.

I've tried 3 different Mini USB Cables - even went and bought a brand new one this afternoon thinking that had to be the issue. When I connect it to USB windows notifications pop up saying 1 of 2 things (it varies... about 50/50).

1. USB Device Not Recognized (then proceeds to tell me no suitable driver)
2. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized

Sorry for the double post... but there's one more peculiar issue. When I first connect power (prior to inserting the Mini USB) I can toggle the Demon's switch on the front on and off. After attaching USB and getting the windows notifications, however - upon removing the USB I can no longer toggle the button and the lights stay blue.

The DemoN only needs 5VSB and GND in order to communicate via mini-USB. I'd therefore desolder all other wires from it first and see if that gets you any result. If not, get out the desoldering braid and flux and desolder as much as you can from the QSB points in case you have any shorts.

After re-soldering the QSB's (pretty damn sure they're good now) and trying the 5V and Ground wires only, still no result. I did have one more idea; though it failed. I went into device manager to manually apply the driver that came packed in the common files of JRunner for the Demon, and this is the error I got.

had this happen to me.

Try a different computer.

Also check your ribbon cable. These are the 2 things I did and eventually it worked but for one of the demons it wouldnt work on my main computer only on my older one

I had this happen to me a lot on and off when playing with mine.
The best I can come up with was ribbon cable related. I had the module hanging from the ribbon out of the front. It would periodically detect, not detect.
Sometimes I would have to unplug power, plug back in, toggle to onboard, then plug in usb for it to detect. I also noticed when you get the Unrecognized device, you cant toggle onboard/demon nand with the button anymore as I believe it freezes up something on the demon.
When I finally reseated everything and had the module not swinging in the breeze, it worked more consistently. Once I put it back in the case without the top, it was fine.
sealed it all up 2 weeks ago and havent had a detection error since.
Also I had it where it would detect but during a dump/write it would error and jrunner would crash.

I'm going to try using an old XP machine later after I get home from work to see if that changes anything (so far I've used a Win7 x86 and Win7 x64)

After all the suggestions about the ribbon cables I did reseat them a few times this morning... and noticed this. Can anyone confirm if this is normal / WTF is going on with the longer trace indicated by the arrow. This is the ribbon cable going into the front switch panel.

Rather than just re-seating and guessing, get a meter and set to continuity. Make sure that all pins on the USB board connect to the pins on the DemoN.

So does that extra length of a trace in the previous picture look normal ? I'll get the multimeter out as well when I get home tonight, thanks for the help guys.

Only way to know if you have a bridge or bad connection is a multimeter like Martin said. Helped me find a bridge I had between D0 and D1 on my slim that was otherwise invisible.

Sh!t, my damn multimeter is back in California... I'll be back there in a few weeks; but by then there may be a RGH for dash 15574 right? I have a Xbox Elite with 15574 and a brand new coolrunner Rev. C.

Question is... do I continue trying to Demonize this falcon w/ a Coolrunner Rev. B (it'll be a few weeks before i can go back at it, testing for continuity and all...) Or do I wait it out and see if the RGH for 15574 is compatible hardware wise with the Elite I have. Desoldering the demon and putting it in the Elite w/ the brand new coolrunner would be no problem. As soon as 15574 is RGH'able it'll be front page news for sure correct?

Finish the falcon. Do you even know what motherboard is in the other one? Could b a zephyr and well that would be terrible.
