Alt 5v on 1.6

Ok I have a few questions about the Alternate 5v install on 1.6.

First, is it required? (normally i would think yes but it is called Alternate)
Second, where exactly should it be touching? The pictures on the install tutorial do not really show what it is touching. Should i be worried if it is touching something else around the solder point? Will it short circuit?

Any extra pictures would be extremely appreciated.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Yes if you have a 1.6 version box then yes you need the 5v connected!
And yes if you have soldered the wire and its touching any other trace then I can guarantee you that you will have alot of problems

I don't know how this isn't clear enough

i got it from here

It's is an Alternative to the 5V on the pin header... Thats why you remove a pin on the header when installing on 1.6 machines. You must use the Alt 5v if you want to switch the chip off!

Yes i have seen that pic, but it shows from the birds eye view. I was wondering if i could get an angle or side pic of the solder point there.

Sorry about the big picture everyone, and i don't think your going to be able to get another view of the trace. Its pretty flat to the board. If you open you box up you will see exactly what you looking for by that picture and wont need another angled picture.

Yeah, solder the wire to it and plug in the other end to the X3. If you want to see it from another angle, open your Xbox and look at it.

What is "it" exactly?

Sorry if i'm not as proficient with the xbox as most of you, but i'm just asking. After all that is what this forum is for, isn't it?

I am not being rude but if you are having trouble with this solder connection then you really should not be attempting to mod your Xbox yourself.... It is probably the easiest solder job on the 1.6.

Get someone else to do it for you or at least talk you through the mod and the fundamentals of soldering..

Hope you dont fry your box.

Here, use this point for 5V instead:

I don't like using the point that Team Xecuter recommends, it can be a pain to make your wire stick to that leg, so I use this point straight off the power supply. You do have to lengthen the wire, but it doesn't get any easier than this to solder.

The reason you have to use an "alternate" 5V power source is because the 5V source at the LPC is ALWAYS on when the xbox is plugged in, regardless of whether the xbox is on or not. You could use the LPC for power, but every time you turn your xbox off, you'll have to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in before it will boot again.

I'm not scared about the soldering I have soldered many things before, What i'm worried about is what i'm soldering IT too. ( ya it may be obvious to some of you but you got to understand that I don't study xbox motherboards in my spare time that is why i came to the forum to MAKE SURE that I was doing everything correctly, and you can't blame me for that)

Thank You for actually helping instead of saying things like "if you can't figure it out, don't do it."

For anyone ever having trouble getting solder to "stick" to something, I'll let you in on a secret.

In order for metallic objects to be joined with solder, all objects must reach the same temperature of the solder itself.

In the case of the 5v 'leg' of the component shown above, it's best to add a little solder to the leg, then holding your tinned wire adjacent to it, put the iron on the tinned wire. You'll see the solder from the leg take hold of the wire. Remove the iron and the solder should cool sufficiently to bond.

This sounds blatently obvious but since people have a little trouble at times...

;)

Martin

PS Tonylott - I deleted your inflammatory post. I know it gets frustrating at times but language like that is seriously out of place on these forums.

Ok you see where the soldered wire is (orange)?
If you look to the left of that you can see there is that leg type thing coming out of the otherside of the chip.

Before that orange wire is soldered there are 2 of those legs, you simply solder the orange wire to the right leg (it is smaller in real life then it is in the picture)[/img]

Thanks Martin C, I logged on this morning to edit it anyway....
My appologies to the whole forum.... Out of order (and not really my way!)

Dirkamiss please note that slating people who are genuinely trying to help is also out of order
