Annoying boot problem / Frag

A couple of weeks ago, my friend and installed the X3 chip into an v1.4 Xbox. The first time we turned the box on, the blue X lit up, we installed the new bios and everything worked great.

Then, I picked my Xbox up from his house, installed it on my TV, booted up and, WHAT?!?!?! I suddenly had Fragging.

I called my friend (which did the soldering, because that's the most common problem) and I brought it back to his house. We installed it on his TV set and it booted perfectly. We could even play lots of games and stuff.

When I came home, everything worked fine, without a problem.

This problem still exists. The moment I turn my Xbox on, the X is red and my Xbox is "rebooting" 3 times, before it starts to frag. Normally you would think, check your soldering. But when I continue doing this for about a longer time (between 10secs and 1 hour), suddenly it boots normally and I can play games for a whole night. So, is this still the soldering ? If the soldering wasn't right, it shouldn't boot at all.

Then I have to mention: holding down the powerbutton has the same effect. And when I'm in the "fragging time", I cannot use the Power+Eject button, for the backupbios. Then, all of a sudden, the box boots and I can use everything. Including the backup-bios and the original msdash.

What is the matter with this box ?!?!? It has always been at the same location, so I really don't understand it!!! HELP !!

It sounds like you have a dry solder joint. Make sure your lpc is solder in well, and reheat the solder to get it to flow into the joints. You may need to remove the solder if their is a dry joint, and tell your friend to make sure he touches both the lpc pin, and the hole around it with his soldering iron. If both pieces of metal are not the same temp, the solder will not flow around them both. These spots are usually easy to see because the solder will have run up the lpc pin instead of down into the joint.

A dry joint is kind of like a short in a wire. Thats why its working some of the time for you.

Frag problem

It is the soldering. Most likely some solder splash between the board and pin header. I had the same problem and did not realize until I took everything out and re-installed more carefully and patiently. Remember this is micro-soldering and excess solder is usually the problem.

I figured out my problem and it's fixed now. There where 2 pins on the LPC (the pin thingy is called LPC, right *blush*) that weren't connected right. I could move them up and down. We resoldered the 2 pins and everything works fine now. Thanks everyone !
