B-Day time is here again!

Well, after reading various forum posts on getting a mod chip for the XBOX so it can read backed up versions of my XBOX games, I saw various opinions on which to get. Can you tell me what some of the better ones available are, and what XBOX's that are pre-modded are better/where to get? (this is for my son and I want to make sure to get it right for his B-Day [buying another xbox modded])

I noticed there are a lot of seemingly scam based websites offering modded xbox's, and don't really want to invest in something only to get ripped off.

Also, providing I buy a pre-modded console, do I need to upgrade the drive, buy extra components or anything else for that matter for the xbox to read back-ups of xbox games or connect to the pc? I wasn't sure of the benefit of this but it seemed that the posts indicated that the backup process, obviously, is done via pc, and I saw flashing??? had something to do with this as well. Also, I know the xbox cannot read dvd's, but can read xbox dvd's so I assume that a new drive would be needed.

I appreciate any help. Xbox modding etcetera is like reading Greek to me as my son plays it A LOT while I am more versed in PC's. (I guess as my son puts it, "You think you can beat ME in XBOX?" Now, show me a mouse and keyboard for Xbox games and I can show him! lol Since he's so into the XBOX is the reason I thought this would be an ideal gift. Any information would be appreciated; I heard you guys were the best.

Oops, almost forgot... would a mod chip interfere with xbox live... not a big deal if soas he has the other Xbox. Thanks

Here's the bottom line - if you buy a premodded Xbox, you'll need to flash a hacked BIOS to it. It comes with a legal BIOS called Cromwell FlashBIOS (or Xecuter FlashBIOS). It's up to you to flash it though.

Once flashed, you can go ahead with playing backups and imports. There's more than enough information here (see the FAQs) and on Xbox-Scene.com. Have a good read and make an informed choice, although I will say the X3 is the best chip around!!!!

You'd end up with a better system for cheaper if you did it yourself, however you probably don't want to mess things up, or want something pre-packaged and shipped so he has no idea you're doing it for him. Either way you'll probably have to do a little work, flashing the chip and setting up software, xbins can help with that. The xbox should work fine on xbox live (provided you switch the chip off), and if it doesn't I would complain to the person/website that sold the box to you for not making that clear. As for those pesky controllers vs the keyboard/mouse setup this (http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/xb-xfps) should help ;-) If your premod comes with an X3 modchip make sure to flash with an X3 bios to make use of all it's features. And no, the xbox CAN read DVD's just fine, there is no need to replace the drive as the one that comes with should read DVD movies and burned disks fine, make sure they tell you which drive is included, or specify which one you want, as a couple of the drives don't read all burned disks(probably samsung or LG would be what you want, I think the LG is the best new one...)
