This is a bit of an old story, but nobody seems to have argued out the precise ramifications, so I'm arguing them out here with due smugness and condescension. Warner registered no less than 15 Batman Arkham-themed website domains back in January, as spotted by Fusible, and those domain names hint at an exceedingly broad and varied future for the man in the pointy hat. No, not Rincewind. The usual caveats apply - Warner could be snapping up domains to protect its intellectual property, rather than to pave the way for a new Batman project (though a new Batman project is down for release this year, possibly on next generation consoles). Still, the list suggests that the publisher has a fair few ideas about how to evolve the franchise, perhaps via a gene-swap with other Warner IP.

Here it is in full:
arkhamuniverse.com (Arkham Universe)
batmanarkahmuniverse.com (Batman Arkham Universe)
batmanarkhamarises.com (Batman Arkham Arises)
batmanarkhambegins.com (Batman Arkham Begins)
batmanarkhamdarkknight.com (Batman Arkham Dark Knight)
batmanarkhamknight.com (Batman Arkham Knight)
batmanarkhamlegend.com (Batman Arkham Legend)
batmanarkhamlegends.com (Batman Arkham Legends)
batmanarkhamnight.com (Batman Arkham Night)
batmanarkhamorigins.com (Batman Arkham Origins)
batmanarkhamstories.com (Batman Arkham Stories)
darkknightarkham.com (Dark Knight Arkham)
dcarkhamuniverse.com (DC Arkham Universe)
dcarkhamverse.com (DC Arkhamverse)
thearkhamuniverse.com (The Arkham Universe)

Taking everything at face value, "Dark Knight", "Begins" and "Arises" obviously point to a tie-in with the Christopher Nolan movies. "Origins", furthermore, suggests that a prequel might be on the cards, which could be one way of addressing the (cough) death(s) of certain major characters in Batman: Arkham City.

"Legends" and "Stories" sound like spin-offs to me, perhaps for handheld, and the "Universe" stuff could refer to another of those big online services publishers are so fond of nowadays, after the example of Battlelog or Call of Duty: Elite. The "DC" domains, finally, indicate that we're looking at a crossover effort.

Add your own hypotheses, theorums and prognostications. Rumour has it that the new Batman is in development not at Rocksteady Studios, but Eidos Montreal - developer of the Thief reboot. Those chaps know a thing or two about skulking in shadows.
