Some would say that pitting a bunch of gangsters armed with AK47s against the world's greatest detective and his Boy Wonder is a shade unfair. Some would also say that multiplayer has no place in a Batman Arkham game. The below feature should lay doubts to rest on either count - it's a guide to Arkham Origins' Invisible Predator mode that hopefully demonstrates just how much fun there is to have. For context, you might want to check out my original Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer hands-on. The short version is that no, nobody was really asking for this, but developer Splash Damage has done an impressive job nonetheless.Be selfish... up to a point
Unsurprisingly, neither Bane nor the Joker's minions adhere to a strict moral code. There is no honour among the minions of famous supervillains - each and every one of them is out for himself. As Splash Damage's creative director Alastair Cornish told us: "The enemy gang members aren't nice guys, they're selfish, and we play on that. We've lots of things that kind of pull you apart, make you want to separate from your team and be out for yourself."

One such feature gifts the first gang member to raid an ammo crate a couple of extra grenades, and another lets the first person to a door play as Bane or Joker. These are good short term boosts, but be aware that teammates may take against you for nabbing the boosts, and refuse to help you out later on.
Dress for success
As you play more matches, you'll unlock different costumes, weapons and items for your gang member. Keep in mind that some of these items aren't just for show - they'll actually change your abilities and alter your stats.

Equipping a certain mask or shirt, for instance, might lower the cooldown of certain actions, or boost your movement speed. If you've got a particularly good loadout for one side in particular, or you simply prefer Joker's gang to Bane's or vice versa, you can register this in the multiplayer menu, so that wherever possible, lobbies will automatically allocate you a spot on that team.
Use Enhanced Vision carefully
While Mr Wayne and his accomplice get unlimited access to Detective Vision, gang members have to make do with a poor man's knock-off - Enhanced Vision. This works much the same as Detective Vision but with one crucial difference - it runs on rechargeable batteries and as such can only be used in very short bursts, which quickly drain power.

Let the meter deplete completely, and you'll have to wait a few minutes for the batteries to recharge. This leaves you extremely vulnerable to attack from rival gang members and especially the two heroes, so it's smart to be extra vigilant, and stick close by your teammates, until your senses are fully restored.
Remember that the hunted can become the hunter
As in the other single player Arkham games, Batman (and Robin) can perform instant takedowns on oblivious villains. But, if you're wise to their whereabouts, the dynamic duo won't be able to one-shot you; they'll either have to run away and start again, or risk taking you on up close and personal.

Seeing as you're the one with the bullets, the latter scenario is likely to go your way. Don't give heroes any chance to surprise you - cover nearby grates, corners, and ledges and you may just catch the caped avengers in a tight spot, forcing them into direct confrontation. Be wary though - if the heroes are working together, the other could easily flank you whilst your attention is on his pal.
Keep moving, but keep your eyes peeled
On that note, make sure to always, always check your surroundings while you're on the move - especially when approaching control points dotted around the map, which tend to attract opportunistic heroes looking to score an easy win on a careless lone villain. Keep your eyes on the skies, but don't be taken in by the swarms of bats and tattered, flapping pieces of fabric carefully placed to spook you.

Panicking and shooting wildly into the air will only draw unwanted attention. If a hero does drop in on you unexpectedly, use evasive abilities such as roll, dive to cover and sprint to maintain a safe distance between you and the masked vigilante. They can use slide tackles, melee attacks and fly kicks to ground you, so never let them get close enough to try.
Be vigilant for Bat-gadgets and Bat-traps
It's almost impossible for gang members to hide from Batman and Robin due to their Detective Vision. They'll swiftly zero in on any member wandering around on their own and pick them off. Staying together might mean you have a better chance of spotting the pair, but it doesn't make you immune to their gadgets.

Tools like the explosive batarang can scatter your team and leave you open to attack. A smoke bomb won't necessarily force your team to disperse, but it can leave you blinded and vulnerable to humiliating double takedowns. Be wary of traps, too - batarangs can be thrown in an arc to fool you into thinking a hero is in another location, and explosive gel can be pre-emptively placed to detonate when you give chase to a supposedly fleeing foe.
Phone in a dangerous friend
When gang members secure an entry point on a map, the option to call in one of the two supervillains Bane and Joker becomes available. The first gang member to reach the entry point will be swapped out for their boss, and these supercharged characters have the power to easily turn any match around.

You'll have access to extra weapons and unique abilities when playing as Bane or Joker, but you aren't invincible - so try not to get too carried away, as once you're dead, the supervillain is down and out for that round. That said, you'll be able to soak up a bit more damage and deal out a lot more punishment - so try and make the most of the time, and don't allow yourself to be crowded by the gun-wielding thugs on the opposing team.
Bag a hero, score a comeback
If you're unlucky enough to be the last man standing on your team, make shooting down a hero your top priority. Not only will this bring your downed teammates back into the game, it'll considerably lower the heroes' intimidation rating. Just be sure that by watching the skies, you don't allow competing thugs to walk up and shoot you in the back.
