just wondering where would be the best placement for a external fan on a slim would be? Also should it be an exhaust or intake? or would a fan upgrade be best?

Why would you want to do that if I may ask? Are you having temperature issues with the existing fan? The only reason I can think of replacing the fanon a slim would be for asthetics.

Best not to mess with the fans unless you know what you are doing. Air flow is not as simple as pumping more in or drawing more out. Heat transfer occurs most effectively with turbulent mixing arround the fins of the sink. By pumping more air in or sucking out air, you could effect the sink mounted fan's flow characteristics. If I were you I would just make sure you keep the vents free from any obstacles.

That is very articulate! Well worded.

There is an aftermarket fan attachment that clips on the disc drive side of the console. I believe it blows air in but I'm not sure. I really didn't see how it would be functional with it blowing clear across the console with the disc drive being right there. Seemed like a bad idea to me. Hey if you try it record your temps before and after so we know how it works.

Personally I just change the fan speeds on all RGH consoles to at least 70%. It keeps the console nice and cool and its not as ridiculous sounding as full 12V.

70% is still a bit much tbh. Personally, I prefer to just edit the SMC Config to run the console 10-20C cooler than normal. Usually results in the fans running at a reasonable volume, just a bit louder than normal and it's non-reliant on an app like FSD to maintain the fan speed. You can just set the temps in Dashlaunch 3.02 and voila. That said, if I were dealing with a Xenon, Zephyr or even Falcon or Opus I'd set the SMC Config to -30C (maybe not so extreme for Falcon)

I've read somewhere that slims run slightly warmer but that it's not an issue like with the phats. You could try a whisper fan before you start adding external fans. It might solve your problem.

I replaced my stock fan with a whisper fan but did not really notice a huge difference in temps (via FSD) but it did add a nice blue glow :D
My slim fan settings are set to auto but I can live with the noise up to 65% above that it gets ridiculous.

I just replaced the fan on my case modded slim, it is also a Talismoon whisper fan model, I did however notice that it blows instead of sucking, so if the xbox is in a tight area or is not well ventilated then you can do a bit of damage to the other components in the xbox using this fan. Strange how they chose to do this.

^ 100% - this is how to manage heat. Edit SMC Config and lower the temps inside so they start to ramp up at lower levels.
