Bethesda "super happy" about id Software's secret project - but is it Doom 4?
Bethesda's Peter Hines has taken a few moments to say not very much about id Software and Arkane's future activities. In particular, he's rather stoked for whatever id Software's working on. This should make for welcome reading, given persistent rumours that id and Bethesda have had a bit of a falling-out over work on the unrevealed Doom 4. Screenshots purporting to be of the latter surfaced online in March last year, a few months after Bethesda shot down claims that the game had been postponed indefinitely following less-than-satisfactory reviews of post-apoc open worlder Rage.
In April, Kotaku published a lengthy insider piece alleging that Doom 4 is now a next generation game, once envisioned as "Call of Doom". The piece suggests that id Software struggled to manage work on the title alongside development of Rage. Bethesda denies everything, of course, but did concede that "an earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect".
"As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know."
Asked about the future of Rage, the company's marketing boss Peter Hines told IGN that a sequel is still "to be determined". "We'll see," he said. "Right now, [Id's] focus is on their current project. They are full bore on that. What I've seen of it recently, I'm super happy about it. We want them to stick to that until we're ready to talk about what that is. But let's wait until we get there first."
He also dangled the prospect of a sequel to Arkane's stealth hit Dishonored. "In general, we try not to wade into anything as a one-off in the first place, so yeah, for sure. The success of that game and how proud Arkane is of it and what goes on at any studio when they put out something like that and all the ideas that are coming out, certainly it's something that we feel is a franchise."
Arkane announced vacancies for work on next generation projects in February. Assuming all three sequels get made, which do you think will see daylight first - Doom 4, Rage 2 or Dishonored 2?
