Bethesda's Pete Hines has cautioned fans to go easy on the old Fallout 4 drum, telling Polygon that worlds as vast and content-packed as the Capital Wasteland don't exactly grow on trees. "I mean [fans] have been clamouring for a Fallout game for a long time now," he said. "What people need to understand - whether it is Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane or anybody - [is that] expecting information like that in any short period of time after they moved off one project to the other is really unrealistic. "We are not into annual franchises - just trying to spin out a version of our game year, after year, after year - like, we have never done that, I don't see that it is something that we are doing anytime soon. But that doesn't mean that we are going to take our time and wait six or seven years in between a game that a studio puts out.
"But these are big games that take a long time and folks need to understand that we have a very certain way of going about things."
A bit of frivolous arithmetic: Fallout: New Vegas hit shelves in 2010, so if Hines is on the money with his "six or seven years" thing, we can expect the next Fallout before 2017. Excellent. Where do I pre-order?
Bethesda wants to work with developers "who have been in this industry for a while and are known for doing cool innovative things," Hines added. "I think you saw that with Arkane and Dishonored obviously and everything that Todd Howard taught us with game studios.
"Todd Howard's studio kind of fits that mold where they constantly sort of reboot from scratch and build something new all of over again." (Todd Howard's team, in case you'd forgotten, is working on something "really awesome" that's "100% unrelated" to the Elder Scrolls Online.)
Fallout 3 voice actor Erik Todd Dellums teased a Fallout announcement in January. According to this illustrious personage, "Three Dog will return".
