I would like to potentially boot the Xbox from a USB memory stick and ideally disabling the noisy hard-drive. Is there any way of this being an option in a future xecuter mod-chip ?

I can see many a reason someone might want that type of functionality and it isn't to difficult to impliment. A nice xbmc setup for media only is just one example but one that I imagine quite a few folks might be partial to. Another solution to your "noisy hard drive" issue would be one of the many nand memory devices that emulate ide hard drives. Try a search on google I have seen them in 10,40,128, and 512MB configurations used in things like ATMs.

I use my xbox mainly as a multi-media set top box with xbmc plus the frontend scripts for mythtv. Having the hard-drive whirring throughout is an unneccesary addition of noise and excess heat. If there is a way of doing this at the moment with a bios that's already available then I'd be very willing to give it a go. I wouldn't wish to get rid of the harddrive permanently so the addtion of a switch disabling the power could possibly be a simple solution.
