am brand new to the to xbox gaming infact my 360 isn't even in my possesion yet. i've been lookin into burnt games and what not and was just wondering what exactly a modchip does, is it what i need to play burnt games on my 360

Be careful - if you are asking what/how to play games that you have copied from elsewhere then you need to find a different site to post on. No discussion relating to piracy and/or fraud will be tolerated on the site.

Mod chips (from what I understand) do a similar job to what the firmware hack does (covered in the tutorial), but as a hardwired solution.

Modchips patch on the fly for the most part, essentially doing the exact same hack as flashing ones firmware. They are useless at this point, as they dont offer more security from live. The only potential benefit of some of the chips is to be able to disable them when not using backups. IMO, they are a waste of money.
