Hey y'all!

Well, I just got an XBox free of charge. A friend of mine began by buying an XBox. Eventually, the DVD drive broke (Thompson, of course), but he's not 'electically' inclined, and went out and bought a new XBox (the old one was no longer under warrenty). Then, the second one began 'stuttering' on boot up. Fortunately, his mom bought an XBox for Myst (strange... but that's women for you :)) but she beat Myst and gave it to him.

So, it turns out the stuttering one has the Samsung drive. I did him a favor and moved the functional Samsung into his 1.0 that had the bad Thompson. Fixed everything right up. He was so appreciative (I guess I saved him buying another box...) that he gave me the non-functioning one. I know the DVD drive is bad, but I figure if I can get the rest of XBox working, I can use it as an emulator or backup box. So, here's my problem:

The one he gave me is (I think, I didn't get a great look at it) a 1.2-1.3. I'm not sure: I'll check it Sunday for sure. It's still stock. On boot up, it for a lack of better word, 'stutters.' The sound is choppy and the flubber animation is jerky. Most of the time, this results in total freeze of the XBox. Any ideas?

The first thought that came to my mind is a bad d0. However, on examination of the board, it visually looked okay. However, if y'all believe that is the problem, I am more then willing to take a second look at it.
Another possibility that jumped to my mind is a bad HDD. Could this be causing some of the flubber issues? I thought that was kept on the TSOP chip, but I'm ready to look at all possibilites.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, some links to sites that can tell you how to analyze the XBox mobo using a multimeter would be awesome.

BTW: I know I've seen this problem address on the forums before. However, I believe those topics got deleted when we changed the format of our forums. I used the search button, but couldn't find anything relevant. Thanks is advance!

Either my couch or my chair.
i know what you are talking about, but i also have yet to see a solution. my friends box does the same thing, and i know that its not hdd related. he had it chipped and we swapped everything from my box to his and it was still the same. it was something on the mobo, but i wasnt able to determine the problem.

It could be very possible, [since you did say you didnt get a good look at it] that your Mobo is infact a 1.0 . Now its gotten to where some 1.0's are coming with the newer heatsinks, so one look at it now you cant really determine as easily as before. [M$ is probly going through the scap pile :D]. My cousins XBOX was given to me because of a similar problem, except after a while it started to lock up at "XBOX/ Microsoft for good. I looked and looked with my own eyes and with a magnifying glass to maybe find some fault in the board, but due to probably poor cooling and bad placement of the box, the solder had expanded and bubbled out of the LPC holes and kind of moved into some fragile traces! I tried cleaning up the mess, but it actually didnt help, this is the exact reason why his box f'd up. Double check the LPC, at this point, I'm the only one I know that this has happened to, oddly enough. Other than Linux, I can't really help you with your Mobo prob. My suggestion is to just slap a new 1.0/1.1 in the box and play on.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion, Kimosabe. However, I do know for a fact that it is not a 1.0. It's about a year to year-and-a-half old XBox. Microsoft had not begun raiding the parts bin yet. :) Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Thanks for the answer rh387. You know what's wierd though? I just started it up a minute ago, and it worked just fine! However, I'm not sure I trust it 100%, so I'll try to play Halo for a few consectutive hours, shut it off, and then see if come back on okay. If not, then that helps me diagnose the problem: that means that something could have come loose, and after the XBox heats up, it disconnects or loosens whatever the problem may be. I really think it must be the TSOP chip, because the d0 looked A-okay. Go figure. But hey, if the problem never redevelopes, then I got a free XBox for very little work (besides a bad DVD drive)! That Jerek is a nice guy...

Nice work man, looks like you just saved yourself $150.
Play on, my friend.
