Broken XBox, now what to do w/it...?

Hi...

It's been a couple of days since I posted in another forum w/no follow ups. Now that I have had a look around - I think this is a better place to ask my questions.

Basically, my XBox broke w/the green screen of death. But, w/o any error codes?!?! I suspect the hard drive has died. Evidently swapping out is not an option as the XBox employs the ATA password option and supposedly uses a unique one for each box. And spending $80 to fix it or buying a new one ... well, I am siding for a new one.

So, what to do w/the old one. Time for hacking I'd say :)!

Ideally, I would like to return to a standard functioning XBox. But I think the built in ATA password will put a hold on those plans. So, am I right in thinking the only alternative is to use one of these mods talked about here? If so, that leads to all kinds of other questions... but first things first... is the mod the only way to go (if I don't want to spend another $80)?

...thanks

Humm...

Didn't see the "Apps" after the title of this forum. Still people here are working on mod'ed XBox's and that's what I want to know more about... Can I get my XBox back into working condition by mod'ing it? And, perhaps end up with a working PC on the side :) ??

You can get somone to softmod your box in order to change the eeprom, thus being able to install a new hdd and return it to a stock condition. But, if you buy an install a modchip, you can still have all the bonuses of a mod chip i.e. backup games to your hdd, alternate dashboard etc, and you can ALSO have your xbox back in stock condition as well. This is assuming that it is your hdd at fault here. If it's not the hdd then you may still be up for replacing parts. :)

Disconnect the hard drive and see if you still get that green screen. No HD should produce an error, yes?

Sorry, pulling the ATA cable produced the same green screen of death w/out an error. Thanks for the suggestion though...

Hi Rookio...

Assuming the hdd is the problem (you are right, it may not be) -and- I get around the ATA password problem when replacing the hdd w/a new one -well- I am left to wonder where will I find an image (providing M$ put something on the hdd in the first place) for the new hdd?

...thanks
