Hey guys,

Yeah I know I'm only a couple years late on the Xbox scene (sarcasm), but my wife got me one for Christmas and never leave anything stock more then 48 hours after I get it. I've been modding since ps1 and I just have a few questions for you guys that have all this knowledge when it comes to the Xbox.

Unlike the PS's, usually you just throw a chip in there and if all solder is well, throw an original in ..boot!, throw a backup in...cross your fingers.. and you're on your way to endless...backups.

I've been reading these forums for about a combined six hours trying to grasp the whole concept of modding the Xbox. Whole new world. Between the multiple Bios's and external switches to flashing the bios's and making sure what version you got.. I think I have the "basic" concept. However, I do have a few questions that I would like to propose to some of you. And believe me, these questions are probably pretty stupid.

From what I gathered, I do have a 1.6 version (Samsung-Xcalibur) and I understand that the 3.03Flash will not work, but the 3.01flash will. So I ordered my chip today with those specifications. If I'm not mistaken and please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that you CANNOT disable the modchip at all (Red led) with the v1.6?? Or can you? But here is my stupid question:

Let's say all goes well, LBC rebuild, soldering all well done and everything goes back together no prob. Power it up and the Blue, Red, and purple leds show on the switch panel. NOW... if my chip comes flashed with the 3.01 bios will I have to do anything else? The thing that stumps me is this phrase quoted from the FlashBIOS Tutorials- "e. FlashBIOS is a utility to update your modchip with any other bios. You cannot play games or run unsigned software with this bios. If you want to run unsigned software you must download a hacked bios like X3 Bios, X2 Bios or Evox Bios. These are illegal and we do not provide direct links. Read this page for info where to find hacked bios's http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php"

So I guess my question is and excuse my incompitence, if I were to make an ISO out of a LEGAL copy of a game that I OWNED would I be able to play it on my X3 with the 3.01Bios?? I am not familiar with the term "unsigned software". Are the games direct boot like originals and if they're not how do I boot them? Again, I am sorry for asking such stupid basic questions but I am new to the Xbox and the PS2 modding is much more simple. So if someone can just give me a quick run down as to "what's next" after I plug it in after a successful install would be nice. Might be even a useful link to Noobs like myself.

Thanks for wasting ten minutes of your life your never back for me.. but believe me I really appreciate it!!

Yes you need FlashBIOS 3.0.1 if you have a v1.6 xbox, but if you have a v1.6b xbox you need to have FlashBIOS 3.0.3 not FlashBIOS 3.0.1. Resellers will be anal and send you a chip that has 3.0.1 on it when they are supposed to update them. If the reseller sends you one tell them that they and that they need to fix the problem xecuter(admin) already has stated that they are supposed and if they still hasitate just find someone on the boards here or a friend who could do it for you. If you can't disable the chip then its due to a faulty install. FlashBios is a program on the x3 that lets you update the chip and unlock/lock the HD. This bios is a Linux Cromwell Bios that is legal but does not let you run unsigned code which is illegal, also this bios will only work if you have a standard controller and a/v cables connected to work properly. So in order to run any backup game you will need to follow the link stated log into xbins and download the x3bios and then flash it to the xbox. The term "unsigned code" is like watermarking or internet sercurity cert. if the program doesn't have this piece of code then the xbox will not allow it to be ran. The job of the x3bios is to make the xbox think that everything is a signed piece of code to skip the sercurity check process. Games will directly boot if it is a direct backup. If the game is copied to the HD then to run it you will need a program like Avalaunch or Evox to run the game and you can use Qwix to load up any ISO you have, it is an amazing program and will probably become your bestfriend....lol. Once the x3 is install you then can move on to installing a dashboard like Avalaunch which will let you run games and apps from the xbox's HD. And one more thing the xbox is by far simplier than a ps2 to mod and will allow you to do so much more. Also if you ever plan on playing on xbox live you need the original HD, game and you need the x3 disable or you will get banned. Hope this helps :D

Correct, v1.6 will require FlashBIOS 3.0.1 and you’ll find that some sellers will include both 3.0.1 and 3.0.3, such as modchipman.com. Some problems have been reported that FlashBIOS 3.0.3 will not work on some v1.6 units, while 3.0.1 still does. If you have a v1.6b unit you will want 3.0.3, here’s the link to the news that some have overlooked: http://www.teamxecuter.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=120&mode=&order=0&thold=0

And I’m surprised and pleased that you took the time to read the FlashBIOS Tutorial and saw item “e”. Follow that guide in that link and look for the X3_1959 bios rar file. This contains the BIOS you need to be able to run unsigned apps and game backups from the hard drive.

And yes, the X3 can be disabled. In the installation tutorial at the bottom of the page it shows you the 3 ways to boot the Xbox after installation.

Edit:
I replied at the same time as 1911Wolf. Most of the reply still pertains, so I'll leave it as is. I hope it's helpful :)

Original Reply:
"e. FlashBIOS is a utility to update your modchip with any other bios. You cannot play games or run unsigned software with this bios"

You stated the answer in your post (see boldface).

Details:
All original software for the xbox is "signed" with specific built-in code. This code can't be duplicated for backup purposes. When the xbox loads software (game disk, dashboard, etc), it looks for this code in order to verify the software's validity. If the code is wrong or nonexistent, the software won't boot.

A hacked (illegal) bios will almost always skip this signature check, therefore allowing the xbox to boot any software (games, dashboards, etc). Since FlashBIOS is only a utility to update (flash) your modchip with another bios, it cannot possibly boot any code (signed or unsigned).

For what it's worth, I have a 1.6 and a 1.6b, and both work fine with 3.0.1, and both break with 3.0.3.

I have flashbios 3.0.0 from Bmmods default with the X3 I ordered .. however it appears to work fine (I have a 1.6 not 1.6b) Is there a dire need to update it ? or should I leave it be considering it works great ?

if it worked fine for flashing your BIOS, then just leave it. although i doubt you have a 1.6 if it worked with that flashBIOs, but you never know!

Thank you so much for your responses.. all of you! Glad I asked because I would of put the chip in and starting breaking things when backups didn't load right away. So let me get this straight...

After I boot up for the first time I will be prompted with the FlashBios (3.01 hopefully from the dealer) and then I will go and select "Load BIOS from disc" which I have created extracting the "X3_1959.rar" and burning the "X3_1959.bin" onto a CD-R.. correct? Then I will follow the procedures found on the FLASH tutorial page. If all goes well, should reboot and be good to go, right?? I did notice in the "X3_1959.rar" there were two .bin files.. one was the "X3_1959.bin" and the other was a "X3_1959_v16plus"?? both the same size: 1024kb. Which one shoud I burn??

The only reason why I stated that the v1.6 could not full disable the modchip was because of the statement made in the X3/X2.6 v1.6 Install where it states in the pin header section "(This is 5v on the LPC bus - on the v1.6 Xbox the LPC 5v is permanently on making it impossible to cleanly disable the mod)".......Am I reading or understanding this wrong? Or are you saying indeed if I hold the power button down for a couple of seconds, MS original screen should boot?

Once again... I REALLY thank you guys for the quick responses. You have no idea how much I am learning in the past 24 hours. So so far...

1. Make sure my dealer is sending me my chip with a 3.01Flash
2. Get the X31959 Bios (had no idea was that hard to find!!..once again NRS)
3. Flash the chip with 1959 reboot and hopefully on my way!

Right?!?!?

Also.. what other advantages are there to having a larger hard drive if I am considering having all of my games on removable media? Is there any?

Thank you guys... really![/url]

You will want to use the X3_1959_v16plus as this is for the v1.6/1.6b units. I highly recommend flashing via network with your web browser as it is hit and miss with various media on different Xbox DVD ROM drives. If you do use a CD or DVD make sure to follow the FlashBIOS guide http://www.teamxecuter.com/flashbios/ and set your switch settings correctly (on, on, off, off, off), you can find the sticky for the settings in the Installation Support forum and many other pinned topics that should be read.

As for the 5v pin on the LPC, that is removed for installation on all v1.6/1.6b units, and that is why you must use the alt 5v as shown in the install guide.

A larger Hard Drive just allows you to keep everything on the drive. Like if you use XBMC (Xbox Media Center) you can keep your games, music, movies, photos on the Xbox and not have to deal with other forms of media.

1911Wolf,

Couple of more things then I promise I won't bother you anymore....tonight!

Think I will take your advice on the HTTP flash.. seems easier anyway. On the 5v issue, I release that you take pin 6 out and connect it directly to the chip. But will I still be able to boot to original or no? Guess it's not a big deal if I can't right?

Most importantly, you caught my attention when you say you can keep ALL of your media on this expanded drive.. which would in the long run take out the strain on the laser reading backups correct? So it would be only wise to do what you are doing and so many others from what I read. Are you saying that you would be able to connect your box via network and actually upload .iso images right onto the box?? .iso images that you LEGALLY own of course! Instead of burning them? But no way... are you serious!? That would be too amazing.. if so, can you provide me with some stickies!? What is it just one program? This Xbox puts PS2 to shame.. can't believe I've been out of the loop this long.

ps: do you own a 1911? just wondering.. one of my favorites.. I have a Kimber Tactical.

Thanks again... you guys are great! And I'll try my hardest not to ask anymore questions but it gets more interesting the more I read.

Yeah on the v1.6/1.6b installs we remove pin 6 from the pin header so we don’t get that constant feed that would prevent us from turning off the chip. We then get that power when we need it from the alternate 5v connection. So if we have done this and keep our original Xbox dashboard and files on the drive (or copy them to a new drive) we can then boot to the normal Xbox Dash and use it as if we never modded it.

For playing backups, making copies, and all that other stuff, we install an alternate/homebrew dash, such as Avalaunch or XBMC. This is when we really use the Xbox to it’s full potential and have loads of fun. After you get your chip working and all is good, you can head over to xbox-scene.com and learn all about using this stuff. Or just shoot me a PM anytime.

And yes, I own 2 1911’s! A Kimber TLE stainless and a S&W 1911. And a dozen or so other makes and models of various calibers.

I will be taking you up on the PM when I get everything up and running. I have a 160gb WD drive laying around here collecting dust, so I guess I'll throw that in there after I get the chip installed and everything turns out alright. I just downloaded XBMC and Avalaunch... but totally clueless how to use them. I'll hit you up when the time comes. Thanks for all your time... sure I'll be talking with you soon.

Btw... nice pistols.. same here...18 to be exact. All tactical.. largest caliber .300WinMagnum. Little of the topic I know.. but good conversation. Take care and thanks again... get back with you in a couple of days hopefully.!

Thanks for the offer. Probably do so when I get everything installed and I know that I got the chip installed right at least. Then I will move on to the new hard drive. I'll put my 160gb in it for now.

After you have installed the X3, flashed it, taken a backup of you original HDD (with a regular FTP program - ftp to the X3 bios), exchanged your HDD and formated it in X3 config live (might I suggest that you format with big F: and no G: (this is up to your tast and how you want to use the XBOX))

Get a autoinstaller (fx "Slayer 2.6") burn it to a disc (CD-RW) and use this to install all applications needed for a first time user (more applications than needed in fact). (In Slayer: use install/uppgrade/restore not "rebuild")

This will prepare your modded XBOX and restore the M$-DASH. Then when you hav a working modded box, with a alternate dashboard, mediacenter, hdd bacupgame storageplace etc. you might want to make it personal...

QwiX is used to transfer (unpack and FTP) Bacup .xISO to the modded XBOX HDD.
