A while back, Activision filed a trademark for "Call of Duty: Space Warfare". We've yet to see the fruits of that particular decision, but Call of Duty: Ghosts does its best to fill the breach with a prologue mission set high above the surface of Earth, which was demoed said a recent event. The mission isn't a whole lot longer than the trailer at the bottom of this page, so I've decided to forgo a proper preview. The mission casts you as an astronaut named Baker, performing routine maintenance on the orbital Odin weapons, which are capable of destroying whole cities in a single shot. Suddenly - shock! - a bunch of "South American Federation" troops spring from an innocent-seeming space shuttle, and it's up to you and fellow doer-of-good Kyra to blow them away before they turn Odin loose on the US. Spoilers: you fail. That would explain the post-apocalyptic setting, then.

The mission is visually rather impressive, though heavily scripted - you'll see flecks of interplanetary dust twinkling in the ether, and scratches glinting on your visor. Also striking is the way the space station itself comes apart as you fly through it during the latter half of the mission, perforating the no-good-niks with a swanky space-age rifle.
Returning players may be more interested in new map Stonehaven, which looks bloody enormous. It's a tumbledown coastal castle with a working portcullis, which is said to be especially good for sniping or certain aerial Assault streaks (like that drone thing that fires explosives). Close quarters specialists should make a beeline for the castle itself, naturally, but there's also a maze of crumbling external fortifications to explore, leading to a busted-open modern windmill.

You can change routes through the castle by lowering the portcullis, as you'd expect, and certain walls appear to be destructible, though Infinity Ward's Tina Palacios was unwilling to give everything away. "I like to joke with my co-workers and say that's Captain Price's hometown," she told us.
