Calling all experts - some problems with Hitachi 0059DJ

I have a PAL 360 with Hitachi 0059DJ drive.

PC is an nForce 410 chipset mobo, with Windows loading of one of the SATA ports.

So here's what happened:

Got drive to ModeB using latest SLAX, and tried to flash with "FLASH23S D 1234".

After some 30 seconds it said: "ERROR: Hitachi DVD drive is NOT flashing..."

So I restarted everything from scratch & tried again, only this time the PC froze after some 30 seconds (I almost had a heart attack!). So I reset & hoped for the best! Everything was still ok.

3rd time: I tried FLASH16S this time, it flashed, but said that "STEALTH STEP FAILED" but rest is ok!

Then I tried RESTORE.BAT (with the intention to flash again), but PC froze (similar to before). And that was it for a day - didn't try again!

So I tried the only backup game I have, but 360 just shows a black screen & i have to reset it. I'm not too sure about the backup thou' - I'll be trying some others in a couple of days time! Originals work fine.

Questions:

Why do you think flashing is so unstable on my PC? Is it the nForce controller? Would a PCI card (what chipset?) be better? Can this be done over USB to SATA (which one)?

What's the difference between FLASH16S & 23S ? Is SHEALTH something to worry about?

Is a Pioneer 108 ok to burn backups?

I'll keep you updated once I try another backup!

Burner should be fine.

There may be something conflicting causing it to freeze (no idea, just a shot in the dark). The difference between 16s and 23s is that 16s doesnt include the f900 core, which is for dumping discs (which doesnt work properly anyways).

Dont worry about stealth, it isnt currently needed and i dont know that it was every really needed.

Caster.

Thanks for the input:

I've just listed devices by IRQ in Device-Manager. The SATA controller uses the same IRQ as the USB2 controller (IRQ 21 - a 'virtual' IRQ managed by ACPI). Could it be that causing the crash? Could anyone (who flashed ok a hitachi) confirm wheather his SATA & USB use same IRQ?

Tried another backup - worked fine! Turns out that 1st backup I tried was NTSC!! DUH!

Anyway - all's fine. BUT - i'd rather have a stable platform from where to flash the drive (when an update is released!), so if you have any suggestions - please submit! (like what's the best sata controller to use with Hitachi 59).

bump... :)

To recap - flashed with FLASH16S, but failed on SHEALTH step - would you reflash?

Should dvd have been connected to SATA1 ... cos' mine was on SATA2 !

Any hints for a stable flashing system? Cos' my pc crashed twice! NASTY

P.S. Sorry for being such a pain!
