Can I put any xbox dvd drive in my console as long as I have the key to flash?

I have a hitachi 0078 with a bad laser. I have the key from it, but I want to put the key on my working BenQ. Is this something ok to do as long as I use the stock firmware? Is this bad to do for Xbox Live? Please let me know. Thanks

Spoofing drives is no longer supported by M$.

So you can do it as a straight key swap, but it will be fully recognizable by M$

You are best of replacing like for like, or trying the cheaper alternative first and replacing your laser.

They are not that expensive on ebay, for piece of mind

That's very unfortunate. Anyways I bought two laser diodes from eBay, desoldered the ball, and still no luck. I was able to test the drive with another drive and "YES" the lasers I bought didn't work. I tried a different PCB, flashed, still no luck. The only thing that worked was a Hitachi in a Zephyr, Flashed with key, and "POW" it worked. Buying a new drive is about $30, so maybe I'll have to do that. Anyways, once again thanks for all of your help.

Games will boot, no need to spoof anymore, however it won't be safe on Xbox Live as stated above.

The only swap you just can't do is removing an AP2.5 compatible drive with a non AP2.5 compatible drive: AP2.5 games or XGD3 won't boot at all, and a red light will show up on the front ring any time you make an attempt.

I have Hitachi drives if interested.

Just flash with your key.

Pm me if you're interested.
