Can I run a x3 box without a DVD-Drive?

I'm looking at getting an x3 or an x2.6 to put in a box without a DVD drive. I know the 4981 x2.6 bios is editable in xbtool, which will let me disable the DVD drive check, and hence boot without a DVD drive installed.

Is there a way to disable to DVD Drive check in the x3 bios?

Thanks,

Duck!

ya it should work as long as you don't try to boot to original MS dashbaord... my dvd rom is currently not working so I unplugged it and it goes into my dashboards just fine. (v1.0 or 1.1 or something old)

4981 will boot without dvdrom without being edited
x3 bios will do the same and can be customized for about anything else on the fly, in the xbox, without reflashing the chip to get the results
keep in mind that booting without dvd rom will slow down the boot procedure for some reason

Really? I hadn't heard this before. It isn't a rediculous delay like 5 min or anything is it?

Thanks for the help!

There are a couple of reasons I'm thinking of booting sans DVD. I already have an xbox with a DVD-drive (so if I want to backup one of my games, I can that way), and I can ftp my games and such to the DVD-less one.

I'm looking at buying JUST a motherboard, PSU, a modchip, and a large HD because it's much cheaper than buying a new or used xbox. Either that, or I'm going to buy a broken xbox that has DDE giving DVD-Drive, which is also cheaper than buying a new or used box.

I've actually got a grand scheme of putting both MB's, HD's, PSU's, all 8 controller ports, the one DVD-Drive, and a hub in one box. I believe I have room if I cut one case in half (right at the bottom of the DVD hole) and bondo it to the bottom of a second case.

Why clear a jewel, why add led's or a cathode, why paint an xbox? Because it's a challenge, it's fun, and it looks cool when it's done. ;-)

ya I suppose you are right in that... I hvae done that before to my old computer when "modding" it actually meant cutting a window lol...

but ya I just don't see the point in having 2 xboxes unless you can do 8 player halo on 1 tv or something crazy heh...

I have a huge front projector and a tv right by each other, so, yes, I can do 8 players in one room if i wanted to. What's better, is two players, each with their own screen.
