When you use the crossover cable -- make sure you're computer is manually configed to have an IP address of 192.168.0.x, with a gateway of 192.168.0.1. (replace x with any number). When you go to make a HTTP install, if you wait while it's trying to find an IP, the xbox will finally default to 192.168.0.99. I'm sure you've seen this. Once this happens, just go to your computer (be sure all other NIC's are disabled), open Internet Explorer, and type:

http://192.168.0.99 -- or whatever IP address your Xbox returns.

If this doesn't work, try burning a DVD-R with the bios and the dummy file... be sure to name your bios "bios.bin". If you don't have a DVD burner, try a CD-RW... these work sometimes. Don't use Memorex media.

f**k you
I am having a similar problem, I have tried using regular cables but hooked through my router (DLink) which has a DHCP Server running on it. XBox does not want to get a good IP address even though when I go look into the config tools for the router the xbox shows up (no computer name but the mac address is there). I tried to put in IP address 192.168.0.99 since that is valid on my network, I even set the DHCP server so that IP is in its range of IPs to give out. For some reason I can't even ping the XBox much less HTTP or FTP to it.

I have tried with both CD-R and DVD-R named the bios BIOS.BIN with all the settings they have in the tutorial. The file I used to pad it was a 350 MB file, should I use one exactly 100 MB?? That is gonna be my next attempt. Any other suggestions? I have a new HDD that is going into this thing, could I put the bios on there before I put it in and flash off HDD?

Is it just me?

Make your ISO using QWIX to be sure that your xbox will read it.

You cannot just burn a CD. It MUST be a CDRW. It must be either new or full erased at the slowest speed possible.

The disk should be done in Nero ideally. Make sure you select Disc at once, Finalise CD and burn at the slowest spped you can.

Don't sell your xbox. You have done the hard bit. You are almost there and it WILL be worth the hassle!

Good luck :p

Hrm I guess some people are into the whole s&m thing so why not being into doing it the hard way. I like to burn my cd images with a magnifying glass and hand configured bit patern with error correction. It takes the beter part of a week to make one cd but in the end when I plug it into the cdrom drive and click that icon to see the words please insert disk it just gets me all hot and bothered.

BTW, how much do you want for the xbox?

Firmware update always be necessary even for offline only??

New to modding and my brother's 360 is console banned, so I figured I'd try installing a hacked firmware last night - 1.61 (Samsung MS28). All went well and I backed up a game and it plays fine (although I got two "dirty disc" errors in hour which is frustrating, but it's an old console and not Verbatim media).

Anyway, since this will never be online, will new firmware's always be necessary? I know MS will come out w/ new waves, but will 1.61 always play them or will the system eventually be required to update (and how does that work on an offline only system - update on game disc?). I'm really considering making my 360 and offline only one or picking up a cheap used one for it, but I really don't want to hassle w/ FW updates every 3-6 months.

Nope, just go out and get the new 1.6 non stealth firmware that is floating out in the wild. it's hex edited to assume the activate iso has been booted. Works like a charm. Should work on all future game waves.

Well, that's great to know, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it. I checked a torrent I frequent and xbins - only two places I know to look. Hopefully I'll stumble across it some day.

You can either try and google it, or get the ixtreme 1.61 from xbins.
