Can the game-cartridge slot not be used for storage?

I always am a bit anxious about the numerous times I have to swap the uSD card of the Switch because a single card just can hold so few games. I don't feel like the SD-card slot is intended for continuous swapping of cards. Now, the game cart slot on the other hand seems intended just for that and can be swapped without having to shutdown the switch, so my question would be: why is there no cartridge which itself can hold an SD-card, but inserts into the game cart slot and hence offers additional storage? That way your emunand and some other stuff could be on the normal uSD card in the Switch and that extra cartridge could offer game storage. Is this technically impossible or is it just that nobody has built such a cartridge yet? I for one would love to see something like that for sale ...

The idea is pretty good, and i'm thinking something like they did for the DS consoles would be great, don't think anyone have made that yet, well i haven't seen or heard about it so far
The problem i see is that the Switch game card is much smaller that the DS'ones, so it might be hard to fit in the eletronic things to make it work for SD card, but noone knows what we might see in the future

Not to be that guy, but you could just deal with having a USB in the bottom of your switch whilst holding it, or in the dock for when it's docked, alternatively you can see if there's a case that has one of those power banks with OTG passthrough, might end up looking less messy and have multiple uses

Edit* Or you could even use one of those micro SD adapters which are noticeably smaller than USB flash drives

That won't help if you install games, since you can't install to ext devices

True enough, but having a pluggable 256GB usb with a bunch of games on that you can just play whenever seems like a win win to me, I guess there's more people who really hate having to mount the xci games than I initially thought. Seems like everyone either doesn't know the benefits of XCI or really don't want to go through the mount process ?

It's not a horrible idea, but since SD cards are so check I don't really see anyone developing something like that for the Switch. At this point you can get a 400gb SD for around $60-$80 or run XCI files from a 1tb+ external drive.

You for sure have options instead of swapping SD cards all the time.

@chris2122 That's me. I did it in the beginning, but honestly its just so much easier to install the game, play it and delete it when I'm done. At the end of the day how many games do people really need readily available to play at once? 256gb SD fits plenty of games and 400gb are cheap. This wasn't meant toward you specifically. I'm just saying in general haha.

Yeah I can see why people install I guess, but I have a little OTG adapter I can plug a stick in the bottom of my switch, doesn't weigh much at all and a little kingston 256gb usb with everything on I could ever want, if I wanna just manage my games, plug usb in my pc and that's manage, no need to mess around with opening the switch to grab the micro sd and put it in the micro sd reader that I keep misplacing. Just nice and simple.

I hear ya. That's why I did a 256gb SD and I run a nut server from my NAS (or SX Server if you want to use that). Don't need to pop my SD out ever unless I have issues updating SX through the menu or need to update an nro that I cannot otherwise update direct on the Switch.

Personally I think this is a non-issue. I think this is what happens when you get a bit spoiled - which we all are with this tech - you start nit-picking. I really don't think the SD card slot is in any more danger of failing than the cartridge slot itself. Of course you can use it as many times as necessary - that's what it's designed for.
