Can the xbox read CD-R's, cd-rw's, etc?
This all depends on your dvd drive. There are three types of dvd drive your xbox could have, the thomson, phillips or samsung. The samsung is known to have a high success rate with cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, and dvd-rw. There is a lower success rate with dvd+r and dvd+rw on samsung drives. The philips drive is known to have a similar success rate to the samsung, except it may have a better chance of reading dvd+ media, and a lower success rate of reading cd-r. The thomson drives have a very low success rate with cd-r, however will read some cd-rw (eg verbatim) and has a high success rate with all dvd formats. Please note that all of these factors can vary depending on the media you use/how you burn, etc.

Even 2 DVD drives with the same model number can differ. I've seen a Thompson that wouldn't read anything except DVD-R discs. A friend of mine has a 1.6 Xbox with the same Samsung DVD as my 1.6. Mine will read CD-RW and his will not. Apparently, there's more to this than just which DVD brand and model. However, the Samsungs have generally had the best success for me.

I have a new Samsung drive on v1.6b, and it won't read cdr at all but I am having luck with dvd-r though more expensive.

My thomson drive won't read verbatim cd-rw's. It reads sony 650mb 1-4x cd-rw and tdk 4x dvd+r. Hope this helps.

my phillips read memorex cd-r, and not TDK cd-r's.. couldn't find any cd-rw's around so just used a cd-r to burn Slayer's Auto Installer

all my cd drives read anything especially dvd+r -rw cdrs work only for music with the thompson, and phillips

my THOMPSON was a great drive, i replaced it thinking that it didnt read my bios disc when i just started modding, but turns out i burnt the bios wrong, so its still working like new this is probly my favourite drive

my SAMSUNG 616T (replacement from divineo)same as thompson-reads everything including cdr rw dvd rw

my PHILLIPS is brand new with my new xbox, it seems exactly the same as my other drives, but i think its dying, might need to put in the thompson

i have used MEMOREX HIGH SPEED 16x cdrw
TDK DVD+R
IMATION DVD+R
IMATION CDR and RW
VERBATIM DVD+R
VERBATIM DVD+RW
they all work on all drives for me
ps: use sonic to burn stuff, nero is poo

New drive is out, the Hitachi model, reads almost any format you throw at it, I have not had any difficulties with reading discs. I put the drive in my stock Mod-Virgin XBOX and it will let me copy Cd's from Cd-Rw's...anything.

one of the stupidest things i have heard (no offense but it is) thats like a pc reading a n64 game..
I dissagree I think you may have not understood what he saying.(niether do I)
But if he means to say that He was under the impression tha A modded box could read any/all media then he's not that far off and therefore Not so stupid
on the other hand if he is assuming that you can use ANY disk(ps2copied game, windows instalation Other.....) then YA that is A pretty stupid thing to say.

As far as the topic at hand I own A SAMSUNG drive and I have given it CD, CDR,CDRW DVD DVD-R DVD_RW DVD+R DVD+RW and DVD+R DLI(8.5GB dual layer disk)
Point is my samsung has never refused to use A disk.
At this point (PURE SPECULATION) I 'e say it's MANY different factors that determine what A drive Will or WiilNOT read for example when I burned my first bios dik on cdr @52X the disk was CRAP but doing it again @4X worked good

I agree totally. I've seen 2 Thompsons that would only read DVD-R. My brother's Thompson, however, would read DVD+R and CD-RW. Most Samsungs are great, but I *have* seen one that wouldn't read CD-RW. The Samsung in my 1.5 box is much pickier than the one in my 1.6, but for some strange reason, it will read CD-R. Very Interesting.

I have two Samsungs and one Thomson, the Thomson reads a backup game of mine : mk deception, it plays it fine. However, when I tried it in both samsungs, it loads up the mk logo and then freezes. The game reads in the samsungs but won't play. I used the same xbox to test these dvd drives, just swapping the drives. Has anyone else got a samsung that doesn't play backup games?

I have two of the same model Samsung drives and they behave quite differently. The drive in my newest box will read any DVD+R backup I throw at it. The other one, however, has a strange problem. It only reads DVD+R discs that I burn with my Dell laptop. When I try to burn it in my TDK or NEC drives (using the EXACT same software programs.... Craxtion and Nero), it won't read it. Instead of it saying 'Game' at the top, it says 'Unknown' and it won't play. I even dropped the speed down to 2X on the TDK and NEC drives. No dice. In order for the backup to work in both of my Samsung drives, I have to either burn a DVD+R in my laptop or burn a DVD-R in my NEC. I have no idea why the burner would make such a difference. The brand of the DVD+R media makes no difference either. Figure THAT one out !

i noticed that eneryone in here has been talking about what their drives can read and what they can't read. however i was looking into changing the drive that is in my xbox to something eles that will read cd-r. now my question is , is it possible to dwitch in a pc dvd-rom drive into the xbox? also is it worth it to switch mine to another brand? because i was lookin at some stores that sell the xbox dvd drives and some cost like $80 which is kinda expensive for a dvd drive.

i remember that there was a list of compatible media for each drive. It could have been from the old team xecuter forums, but i am unsure. does anybody have a link to a website with this info?

mastahitm, go to xbox-scene.com and click Tutorials, there you will find out what DVD Drives you can use and how to swap them.

If this helps, please add to my rep, Thanks. :)
