Can you connect to your xbox without a crossover cable/network card?

I have an old computer that doesn't have a network card. Maybe it does and I don't know it but all I have is a external 56K modem that goes into the back of my computer with a multipin connection. Nothing that looks like the connection in the back of the xbox. If you can help it will be appreciated.

Here's my suggestion: go to Radio Shack and just buy one. It doesn't have to be nice. Even an ancient 10 mps would work. Don't worry: they're cheap. Like, $40 tops. You may even be able to get a cheaper one. As long as you know how to put one it, you're golden.

I can shove a cat5 cable into a modem...it's pretty easy as long as it has an RJ11 end on it :p

Ok I am borrowing a computer from my friend that has NIC on it. I am too cheep to buy one. Anyway I set up the boot disk per all the tut out there and tried to flashfxp it but it says there is no path or something. Do I need a router/switch or can I just hook it up back to back. Also do I need to set up a LAN on my computer (using XP) if I don't know how. Can someone guide me to a tut to do this or inform me on this forum?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Jason the annoying noob with dumb questions.......

Don't worry about it. Networking is one of those things that is not heavily covered. It's assumed that you already know that stuff, but I began not knowing a thing about networking. Now I do, and I think I can answer a few of your problems. NOTE: I don't mean to imply that you know nothing, just basically stating what I went through.

You don't need the EvoX boot disk if you have the X3 bios. Do you have an Xecuter 3, or an earlier chip? If you have the X3, use the bios. Moving on...

I assume the IP address of the XBox is something like 192.168.0.xxx. Change the IP of your computer to 192.168.0.100 (unless that is the 'box IP, at which point use 192.168.0.10, it doesn't matter as long as the first three sets of numbers are the same). Then, open FlashFXP and FTP the XBox at 192.168.000.xxx with the username and password "x3" if you are using the X3 bios or 192.168.000.xxx with username and password "xbox" or whatever you have set it to if you are using EvoX. I think if you are using EvoX, the standard FTP stuff is "xbox."

Did that help? I hope so. Good luck! :D

Oh, BTW, you do not need a router or switch. Just use crossover cable and connect the computer and the xbox directly.

A crossover cable would do just fine... just take notice that you will need to assign an static I.P...

Agreed, but not necessary.

If you enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on your internet connection, with the intention to share it with your NIC, it will set your NIC to 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0 and give any Ethernet device connected to it a network address if it has DHCP enabled.

BUT do you have to use a crossover cable?? i mean if the xbox supports DHCP(which it does), then you should be able to connect it with a non-crossover cable to a router. Right?

Possibly, xbox scene has a tutorial on ways top connect it. I can tell you my exact settings but I use a crossover cable. PM me if you want the settings.

Crossover cable only needed for direct Xbox to PC NIC connection. If you have a router, then you can just use a regular Cat5 (ethernet) cable. Depending on what you are connecting to on the Xbox (X3 CL, Avalaunch, Evox, etc.), results have been varied. DHCP should work, but many have better results if the IP address is static. Try DHCP, but be prepared to flip to a static address if needed.

No worries - you should also thank the other six people that gave exactly the same response in this thread.
