does this mean there is no available hardware for hard modding my system? and if so is there any use to the system at all(besides standard gameplay)?

I assume u have an Xbox phat, I wouldn't bother with modding a xenon or zephyr motherboard. If u have a falcon or jasper then R-jtag is the way to go. Xconsoles have rjtag starter kits, Jrp-v2 and NAND-x/rgh qsb v3 sold separately which is basically the rjtag ultimate kit. Not as good a deal but at least it is accessible, or u could hold out for the new jtag chip ( release date unknown) which will probably come as an ultimate kit.

Same benefits as every glitch chip, especially if you can't get your hands on a r-jtag chip anymore. New chip most likely will be even more better/faster etc. so you will gain a little in boot times I assume, but I must say I have had a lot rjtag with excellent boot times. The end results are the same basically. Freestyle dash and all it's benefits.

I would wait for the new chip and don't go for rgh2 with older/other glitch chips.

JR-Programmer/Nand-X(Or Demon if you want dual nand), Soldering Iron(Obviously) Preferably one with a variable temp, but a 15watt radio shack iron will work, Flux(Liquid or paste), .5mm 60/40 rosin core solder, rubbing alcohol. also if you want to make the install easier, nand-x qsb v3 for phat. As far as the R-Jtag kit goes, try the request for service section.
All stuff can be bought from Xconsoles.com here are some links.

http://www.xconsoles.com/products/tx_jrp_nandx_coolrunner_phat_qsb_v3.html Nand-x/JR-P QSB phat(If u get the ultimate kit for rjtag this is included)
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/jr_programmer_v2.html JR-Programmer v2(If u get the ultimate kit for rjtag this is included)
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/tx_demon.html Demon(If you get this, the JR-Programmer isnt nescessary, Unless you install a sonus also.)
http://www.xconsoles.com/products/sonus_360_phat_edition.html (Sonus 360 Phat, not needed but allows you to program custom sounds to buttons like a slim console, Power and Eject noises)

the rest you can get at radio shack.
