Can't read disks?

v1.0 XBox, Xecuter3, Samsung DVD drive, 60GB IBM Deskstar.

I installed a few weeks ago and everything seemed to be fine. I flashed the BIOS; installed avalaunch, evoX and XBMC; copied some backups, emulators, and homebrews over via FTP; and can run everything fine from the harddrive.

But I can't seem to read any disks when the mod is enabled. If the mod is disabled I can put in a retail game disk and it runs absolutely fine. If, however, I enable the X3 and put in a burned game disk, DVD movie, or burned data disk (full of videos) nothing recognizes the disk. EvoX, XBMC, and dvd2xbox all just hang on "initializing disk" or just show nothing on the disk. Same thing happens if I put in a legit XBox disk and try to rip it with dvd2xbox. I've tried with CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-Rs, and DVD+Rs and it's the same thing every time, so I don't think it's a media issue (especially with the Samsung drive, which should read damn near anything).

So the only thing I can figure is that one of the LPC pins controls the X3s ability to access the DVD drive and I may have a bad solder point or lifted trace on that one pin. I looked at the LPC pinout thread but didn't see one immediatly labeled as "DVD" or something similar.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Bump in the hope that someone has an answer for me, I can't imagine this is a new problem but I don't see reference to it in any FAQs or previous posts. Anyone have any suggestions?

May be a dumb idea but have you tried changing the master/slave/cable select jumper on the Hdd ?

The HD is set to Cable Select right now, which is what it should be by default I believe. If I tried changing it would I want to set it to master or slave?
I don't think that's it though, if it were a problem with the IDE interface it probably wouldn't recognize the DVD drive at all but every dash and app sees the drive, sees when I put a disk in, tries to access the disk, and fails.
If it were only happening with backups I'd think the problem is just that I'm creating the ISOs incorrectly but it's not just burned ISOs, it's any disk...

It is not a problem with your install, The chip loads the BIOS then it is done. I would try diff methods of burning to disk. Try using Quix to create ISO and burn to disk using nero.

How are you booting them?
I haven't copied any, but if I download an image (of a game I already own, of course) and burn the ISO to disk, it won't read. If I unpack the ISO with craxtion and transfer it to my HD via FTP it shows up and runs fine in both Avalaunch and EvoX. If I take the unpacked ISO, repack it as an xISO with Craxtion, and burn the image to disk with Nero, it doesn't run.

I've tried both Quix and Craxtion, burned the image in Nero with DiskAtOnce at the lowest possible speed, same problem.

I'd think it was just a problem with the way I'm creating the xISOs except for the fact that if I burn a disk full of MPEGs and put it in, XBMC doesn't recognize the disk as having anything on it either. The other weird thing is that I can boot to Avalaunch, run dvd2xbox, put in a legit, retail XBox game, and dvd2xbox doesn't recognize a disk in the drive.

Same thing if I try to rip a disk image in Craxtion. Run Avalaunch, put a legit retail game disk in the XBox drive and try to create an ISO on my PC's HD, it connects to the XBox but doesn't see anything in the DVD drive.

I also got a stack of backup disks from a friend with a softmodded XBox and tried them. Those disks boot and run fine in his XBox so I know the images are burned correctly but if I put them in my XBox they initialize the disk but show up in the filebrowser as being blank.

The only thing I can think to try at this point is replacing the DVD drive but since it still works absolutely fine with the X3 disabled I don't know that it'll do me any good. Anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions?

Since you seem to be having a problem with every disk you try to burn, I have two suggestions.

First, try enabling the verification feature in Nero, if this shows that the burn was successful, then you may want to try the next option.

Second, try a different brand of media.
