I have an x3CE on a 1.1 Xbox, i did the pin header install (and the grey, red, and green wires) and I am rather confident in my soldering (i have modded 10 or so other Xboxes). the box boots to the flashbios screen (3.0.1) I can access the HTTP flash, but when i send the bios over it says "Unknown flash! Halting". i have tried several different x3 bios(es) and even tried the 1MB flashbios (3.0.3) and this message every time. I can boot the original xbox dash and everything works fine. the external switches are set to [On ON OFF OFF OFF] i have re- re- re-checked my soldering, but will check again just to be safe. i have the 2 blue lights (3V and 5V) and the write protect light is green.

anyone have an ideas on what i am missing??

You should try switching the flash protection switch on the mod chip to protect. Mine was reversed. In other words, when it was green (theoretically unprotect, which means go ahead) it would give me the unknown flash error, when I tooled around with it and put it on red, it allowed me to flash, that should fix your problem. :)

i seem to notice that if the external switch is connected the internal protect switch is irrelevant (green on both positions), if i disconnect the external switch the internal switch will show red or green.

either way i have attempted to flash it with the internal switch in both positions and the external switch disconnected, no luck.
and i have attempted to flash with the external switch connect and in both protected and not protected.

short answer... still no bios loading (very sad)

Very strange. I dunno. Your soldering is probably fine if you are are getting to the flashbios screen and you can boot to stock dash.

On a side note..it does matter how the chip's flash protect switch is, it does not get bypassed by the external switch. The external switch is a secondary measure to stop from flashing in case you don't want to take everything out to access your chip. Oh, and the 3.0.3 is a 256k bios, not 1mb, make sure you're flashing it to a 256k bank. (on on on on, or off on on on are a couple you could use).

UPDATE!!

Ok, so i have had a chance to do another mod (for a friend who does not yet know of the issue wih the last box) this is also a x3CE but on a 1.2 board. and i have the same result. So it has to be me, but i don't know what, i have soldered the pin header and the 3 wires (red green grey). If i do just that it should work to flash correct?? i don't really NEED the external switch or the little power button board inplace.

Wow, alright with all the probs already. Hey I just did my first mod. I soldered a x3ce into a 1.6. I had to use on on off off off and the light is red on the chip. At first I had the light on as green on the chip and it halted for me too. Good luck!!!
