Capacitors sideways

Hi, noob here, if I was to desolder the caps on the bottom-left corner of the mobo, and re-connect them with wires, positioning them sideways instead of vertical, would they still work? And would they damage any components? Thanks in advance:)

Extending the leads on those capacitors should be ok.
As long as you don't go over about 1.5 inches.

Desoldering them , you should be careful that you don't rip the platethrou if there is any.
If the damage any plated throu holes you could try poking a piece of wire throu and soldering both sides.

BUT... As the falcon says... try some other way.

I don't know: I've never tried. However, I suggest something different.

Instead of desoldering them, take a VERY thin blade (razor blade perhaps) and push it under the capacitor, gently. Only put pressure on it when it reaches one of the two wires under the capacitor. Then, cut the legs. Then, pull off the capacitor and lay it sideways next to the two wire nubs, glue it down with hotglue, and use a very short section of wire to join the capacitor to the nubs on the board. I hope that made sense. You just have to be very careful to not cut any traces. Besides that, however, I believe this method would be easier and (maybe) safer. But, somebody who knows more about electonics and confirm this. Good luck!

Hmmm...

Well, I wouldnt suggest doing the blade under the capacitor thing unless youve tried it on a naff board or something.

Desoldering the caps shouldn't be too much trouble.
Just make sure you connect them the right way round!
Otherwise you get an load bang followed by a smelly xbox.

It really all depends on your expertise in desoldering.
If you use a decent 25watt+ soldering iron and some desoldering braid then it shouldn't
be too much trouble.

Suggestion: Find some old pcb's from anything and have a go at removing components.
You will then find out what difficulties you may come across.

If you live near Cambridge, UK , then I'll be glad to give you a demonstration.

I have ordered a damaged mobo from ebay, I bought it to use the av connector for one of my XBOX's that needs one.

I am good at desoldering, but I should have never tried to desolder the av connector, 26 pins! I ended up pulling it out after an hour or more of desoldering and some of these pins stayed in the mobo. So I want to cut around the av connector socket still attched to this damaged mobo that I bought from ebay, then connect it to the matching empty holes on my XBOX mobo that needs an av connector with thin wires.
(See diagram I have attached. You won't be able to read some of the middle wires, it's just to show you the idea. All wires would be soldered to the correct matching points.)

This should work right?

Then, I will practice repositioning the capacitors on this damaged mobo that I bought from ebay before doing it on my XBOX.

Sounds ok to me.

Hot air gun ( like the paint stripper types ) are good for removing large connectors!

Have to have had practice with them though!

Also add fresh solder to each connection before desoldering, makes desoldering easier.

Yep, I agree with bigfathairybiker, adding solder really works.
