Installed a v1.6 Crystal Xbox with X3CP and using the wire install, and i tested it with the case top off and it worked fine!

Then i proceeded to doing all the screws up and as soon as it was all back together it started to frag! weird i thought so i unscrewed the top and then it worked again?

Someone please help, this is really annoying me.

The only thing that I can think of is that the top is making the
dvd rom press down on the chip and causing a problem.

Put some tape or the big sticky pad on the chip so that the dvd
isn't making contact with the chip.

its being installed using the wire install and therefore is stuck to the side of the case so it cant get shorted by the dvd drive?

thanks,
Bruce

Did you do a rebuild on the bottom or just wire to the various parts on the top? I've found sometimes that if the rebuild isn't taped off it could make contact with the bottom of the case when everything is pressed down and screwed together. I guess I'd make sure everything is masked off and no wires are being pressed down or contacting other items (e.g. in your wire install did you trim the tips of the wires so they can't lay flat and accidentally short something else on the board?).

Good luck. There are few things worse than having to debug a problem like this.

A important note to anybody installing their mod for the first time would be to always insulate the work you do with electrical tape. Tape means your work is more secure and often is a good safety net. I always use plenty of tape to cover the underside of the LPC and insulate the D0, LAN and HDD LEDs (also the alternate 5V pin if not needed on the original X3).

i had the same problem, but it wasnt so much the actuall dvd drive pressing on the chip but the ide cable ( its bent double over under the drive if ya look at it close) the electricians tape solution worked ok for me, but i also invested in some rounded shortened ide cable and re routed them around the back of the case (also stuck to f**k with tape).

remember lots of tape diogonally across the chip to secure it!! :D
