Changing MAC Address

I've got broken Xbox [dead HDD] working fine now, thanks to an X3 chip, an 80GB Maxtor, and the advice, tut's and guides from you guys. :)
All I have to sort out now is this weird MAC Address changing problem.
Every time I boot or reboot my Xbox now, I get a new MAC Address, which the DHCP in the Linksys router assigns a new IP too. This would probably be OK, if I didn't have my network limit to only 5 IP's.

I've search the forum for this and found one other person with the same problem, but no answer.

Anyone got any advice one this :?:

some where
this is very interesting because the router dose NOT assign media access controll (mac) address. it can NOT even if it wonted to. but it can assign ip address, so i dont know why you think your router is assigning your mac address. but as far as the ip goes trying setting a static ip.

I know the router isn't giving out the MAC Address's, its assigning new IP's to each new MAC Address the Xbox NIC sends it. So far it’s sent out 9 different MAC Address's, none of which are the Xbox's real one?
yes I checked them, and yes, I know its sad :)

What I have noticed is the X3 will produce out 1 MAC Address when I boot to it, then when I boot to a dash that will produce a different MAC Address as it loads?

This shouldn’t be a problem when I decide which dash to use, and boot straight to it. But that may take me sometime.

Well, don't know if this will lead to something but your x3 chip should have a MAC address as well as the xbox. So that is two mac's accounted for. You can change the xbox's mac address in the dashboard. You could set it manualy and see if that helps. Also you could disable the x3 networking capability to see if that helps.

Why on earth would the X3 have a MAC address? Nothing on the chip indicates a network connection. The only thing that SHOULD have a MAC address is the NIC onboard the Xbox.

Sorry ZaFoD, I don't have an answer, but I might have a solution.

Can you set the Xbox to have a static IP address? is there a reason you want to use DHCP? Personally, this is a box you want to network to, so it makes more sense to keep it static. Don't have the route asign the IP via MAC address, just set it on the Xbox.

the only devices that have a mac addy are devices that access the net, ie ethernet adapters the X3 is not one of them. The mac addy is changing bc the eeprom is messed up, this happened to me when I got a eeprom to replace mine so I could get onto XL but the eeprom was bad and caused me to have different mac addys.

I remember reading a post a while back with someone else having the same problem with changing MAC addresses......can't quite remember the solution, I think it was to set the MAC in the m$ dash to 00:00:00:00....could be wrong tho.....

First off, thanks everybody for your tips and advice. :)

Everything works fine with a static IP, which I tried once I worked out work the problem was. It was just curious about how/why it was happening.
I don’t really need DHCP, except when I go to a friends place.
This will be more of a Media Extender for my MCE than and games machine, so a static IP would be fine.

Do you have anymore info on what a bad EPROM can do?
Could it have killed the HDD? or course DVD read problems?
The DVD drive [Phillips] reads everything except genuine DVD's.
Again not a real problem, as this box will be used mostly for network streaming. It’s that curiosity thing again.

Not just do I have the same problem, but I have the same MAC Address’s :p

Have you tried using a static IP? That should solve the problem.
Don't forget you have to set the same IP, Gateway, Subnet, and DNS in your dashboards too. I tried it on the X3 only at first and it made no difference.

If the drive has been flashed before try downloading Activate.iso and burn it to a DL DVD+R and put it in the drive wait about 30 seconds or so then hit the intro button in JF.

yes sounds like the drive has been previously flashed with 1.4 ifso you will need the activate.iso to bypass the firmguard

I'm having a similar problem with my sammy drive. It won't respond and the power light on the xbox keeps flashing... How can I unlock it with the DVD if the drive won't respond?

My DVD drive was closed when it stopped responding so i had to open that sucker up and eject it manually..
