I have attached a tutorial I made on how to reduce your XBOX cpu and nvidea chip/mobo temp by 17 degrees. Enjoy!

My temps went from 46 to 29.8 degrees (mobo) and from 47 to 30 degrees (cpu).

How to reduce temps by 17 degrees:

The first mod is not for an xbox that is still in the official case: the hdd will not fit inside the case because the fan will be pushing it up. If you have made a custom case for your XBOX with 2cm space between the heatsink and the hdd, then this is a great mod. J The second mod should fit fine in a standard XBOX and reduced the temp of my mobo by 16 degrees!

First Mod:

What you need:

Wire mesh

12V DC 40mm x 40m x 10mm mini cooling fan

Hot glue sticks

Hot Glue Gun

Open up XBOX, on the mobo, there are two heatsinks, the one on the right is the cpu, this is the one we will add a mini fan to. On my V1.0 XBOX, the heatsink on the left has a fan attached to it, on my 1.3 XBOX, there is no fan attached to it. If yours has a fan on the left heatsink, solder the red wire of your mini fan to the red wire of the mini fan that is plugged into the top left of the mobo. The same with the other two wires, yellow to yellow and black to black. Tape these up to prevent shorts when you’re done. If yours doesn’t have a mini fan on the left heatsink, solder some pins to the three holes at the top left of the mobo. There should be a white shape drawn onto the mobo around these 3 holes. This shows you how to connect the fan. (This is where the fan pins would be if you had a fan on the left heatsink.) Then you can plug your mini fan to that.

Take the wire mesh, cut a strip big enough to fold all around the heatsink on the right and touch the plastic base on both sides. Then fold it around the heatsink and use hot glue to attach the ends of this mesh to the plastic base of the heatsink.

Now take the 12V mini cooling fan, hot glue this (facing up so that it draws hot air away from the heatsink and cpu) to the wire mesh on the top of the heatsink.

The reason you should glue the wire mesh to the plastic is because the fan will stick to this, the fan will not stick to the heatsink very well at all. You must glue the mesh to the plastic base of the heatsink, not the metal, this also gives a stronger connection.

Done!

(That was the first mod.)

Second mod:

What you need:

12V DC 40mm x 40m x 10mm mini cooling fan

Hot glue sticks

Hot Glue Gun

Cardboard

Evo-Stick Wood Glue

With the XBOX open, locate the nvidia chip (on the bottom left of the mobo). Take the 12V mini cooling fan and the cardboard, cut small triangles of card that fit the corners of the fan without crossing the fan’s circle/hole. Glue these to the corners of the bottom face of the fan (the side that the air is sucked from. The fan will be positioned so that it blows hot air away from the nvidia chip, these triangles of card are to raise the fan above the chip by about 2mm so that it doesn’t catch the chip when spinning.

Now take the evo-stick wood glue and put a small blob on each of the triangle pieces of card that you just stuck to the corners of the fan. Now place the fan glue-side down onto the mobo over the nvidia chip. Put something on the fan to weigh it down to make a good connection while the glue dries. This glue can take several hours to dry but is very strong.

Done!

Enjoy the Eskimo temps of your XBOX, if you have a crystal XBOX, this will really feel icy now! J My mobo temp went from 46 degrees to 29.8 degrees with these mods.

I take no responsibility for any damage you may cause to your XBOX while doing any of these modifications.

Resized the photos to be uploaded. Here is one of the wire mesh after you have glued it to the right heatsink.

Here are the other photos. This is the XBOX mobo that is gonna be in my millennium falcon XBOX, super cool, no need for a "6 fan hyper drive" that looks like cac lol. Just these fans here and 1 hidden output fan.

Question - where those temps with the case back together or still in pieces on your workbench? I applaud the idea, but can't see the problem you are trying to solve.

With them in the case, but the hdd positioned higher up so that the fan could fit. The problem was that I wanted the coolest possible temps for my millennium falcon XBOX, so I played around with these mini fans and got good results. So I don't need a crappy "6-fan hyper drive". This is much more efiicient.

That's cool, my hdd for my millennium falcon is gonna be cool temp wise because it's gonna be in a mesh tray where air can circulate.

Nice tutorial, I've just recently completed the first tutorial for my PlexiGlass XBOX. Nice results.
