I am having the same problem and Ive done some research. Most people are saying that the connection is bad. I have an x2.6 with the solderless kit and a version 1.3 box. Since the time I recieved the chip it has fragged. I have never seen the cromwell bios screen. I am 100% sure that the solderless chip is installed correctly. I could try to solder it but thats why I bought the solderless chip.

My question Is there any way to put bios on a chip in this state?

Obviously a cd or dvd wont work if the damn thing cant make the system bypass if the bios cant load so the drive doesnt read. Ok buy a programmer. But I just bought a brand new chip that shouldnt need to be programmed. Should I return it to the seller (modchipstore.com)? They just continue to refer me to tutorials on xecuter 3 chip installs. I know the install is similar, but its not the same. How hard is it to have a seperate install guide since so many people purchase it. Dont get me wrong though, I think that the guide was sufficent enough for most people to install their chip.

Is it possible that they sent me a defective chip?

What can I do?

Even if you could get a BIOS to the chip (w/or w/o programmer) it will still do you no good until you resolve the FRAG. You'll just have a flashed chip that won't boot.

As far as what you do with the pinheader, solder points, alt5v/LPC rebuild (if needed) the X2 and X3 installs are exactly the same. I believe only after that point do things deviate, with different switches, the X3's front panel interface and I believe that the X3 mounts in the opposite direction. It would be nice to have additional info on mounting the X2 switches, but that is really the only thing left to do as far as the hardware goes.

Try cleaning your LPC holes with a pencil eraser and then reinstalling. If you have a multimeter try and test for proper readings from the solderless adapter's pins. Xbox-Scene has some info on what you should find. Make sure you have your switches plugged in securely and maybe "exercise" them a bit. Move them back and forth a few times, maybe keep a little pressure on the enable/disable switch when booting. The switch is triggering D0 since you do get a FRAG (wouldn't get one if there was a problem here) but maybe it isn't sending the 5v back down to the chip. Chances are unlikely that you've received a defective chip.

The intall is 99% the same, why waste time on making another tutorial? The X2.6 is designed so that if you ever decide to upgrade to an X3, you just unplug the 2.6, and plug the X3 in.

Did you check your switches to make sure they aren't causing the problem? Does the light only flash red, or red and green?

I have checked all the connections and cleaned the LPC twice. I know about the installs being similar. Thats exactly what I said, but no matter. I checked all the switches also. I have tried booting up with all combinations of switched on and off. the xapter is seated correctly and everything is plugged up correctly. Anything else?

with chip enabled - The light on the chip is blue and the box frags 3 times with green and red. This would lead most people to conclude the connection is wrong. Believe me its not. I had a friend who install xecuter 3 chips all the time look at it and he couldnt get it to work after 3 hours of work.

The only other thing that it could be besides the chip itself would be a power problem. Should I send the chip back and have them look at it and replace it if necessary?

thanks for the posts

If you know someone that does installs, would they have another box that is already modded (pinheader preferred) and test the chip? If it still frags then you have a problem with the chip, or at least the software on it. Maybe they also have a programmer and can confirm the data on the chip? If it boots FlashBIOS then the problem is in your box or adapter. I do recall one instance where a user had a defective adapter, there was no continuity between the pogo pin on the bottom and on of the pins on the top.

Again, you can still use a multimeter and test the output from the pinheader against pinouts provided both in this board and on Xbox-Scene. Your ground, +5v (I believe) and D0 are all fine since you are seeing both a frag and the blue LED on the chip. It could be one of the other points that is causing a problem.

By check the switch, I meant use a multimeter to check the switches.

A shot in the dark here but ....

I've modded my xbox v1.6 with a 2.6CE using a solderless Xapter v1.6. Things were woking fine but because Ive not completely closed up the xbox enclosure hence ... I had my xbox FRAG yesterday. My resolution were:
1. I think that the 2.6CE chip was slightly "knocked off" hence remove the HDD and DVD enclosures and resit my 2.6CE
2. After resitting the 2.6CE, the box still FRAG and I found out shortly after that by "hard pushing" the IDE connector to the HDD, the box came good again.

I do notice that once I used AutoInstaller (AI) to install the apps and did NOT use AI to shutdown the box but instead simply power the box down. This I think caused the HDD to be unlocked and hence I could not boot into either the original MS-Dash or Evox. The box would FRAG in either dash with MS giving an error message to contact MS Support. To resolve this, I booted into FlashBIOS v1.0.1 and locked my HDD.

My suggestion is:
1. Remove the enclosures (DVD & HDD), had the devices plugged in but nothing sit on top of the 2.6CE
2. If the box FRAG, unplug the connectors and replug them in - push them REALY hard
3. If still FRAG, resit the power cables to HDD and DVD drives.
3. If still FRAG, boot into FlashBIOS if you can and lock the HDD.

Good luck

Yep i checked with the other box and the chip still frags. I think that I am goign to buy a programmer for it. I shouldnt have to because you should get something that you paid for, but what can ya do? does anyone know where I can get a programmer cheap?

If you are in the US I'd hit up www.themodchip.com. They are unloading older X2 programmers (but picturing the newer one...) for $2.50 ea I think. Still works just fine with the newer chips, I've flashed three 2.6ce's myself using a programmer I got from them.

Outside from there I don't know. Would recommend looking through the resellers list on the front page (except system-mods... they've gone sour, avoid this shop) and find who has the best deal for your area.
