Christmas lights with and without chip

I chipped a friends 1.6 xbox about a year ago with a 2.6ce and everything was working fine. Yesterday he brings it to me and says that every time he powers it on, it restarts 3 times and then frags. I have checked all the connections, and they are good. The thing that confuses me is that it does it even if I remove the chip. It will not boot anything from disk or hd. I have removed the chip and all drives and it still does it. He says that every ten tries or so, it will boot but I haven’t been able to get it to boot at all. Every other post I’ve read with the "christmas lights" problem, it only did it with the chip enabled, with the chip off it booted the ms dash. Any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

i have some but i don't know how helpful....it might be the Nvidia MCPX chip going bad which means new board....the only reason why i say that cause from what you said up above sound like a board that i had the problems with which after 6 months 3 hours a day of playing with the only other thing it chould be was the MCPX chip

Thanks for the reply. im pretty sure that it has something to to with the motherboard or maybe the eeprom. one of the chips goin bad would make sense. im gonna try and reflash the eeprom with the "flashbios unauthorized" if i can get it to boot even once. thanks again and i will post if anything changes.

What type of install is it? Do you get any error codes? I would ask your friend what he did to the Xbox, even though he will say nothing. Check the soldering and the LPC rebuild. My guess is the Xbox was dropped or something like that, things usually don't just go bad on their own.

Just saw your post. You do know the EEPROM has nothing to do with flashbios right?

I have asked him repeatedly what happened or if he messed with anything and he claims no, but the xbox belongs to his sons so who knows what they did. It is a soldered install with the LPC rebuild board. I have checked all of the connections and they are good. No error codes are displayed as it never "boots" as soon as you press the power button, it resets 3 times and frags, no video, no audio.
There is a version of flashbios that has eeproms embedded into it. I have used this several times to recover from corrupt eeproms. It has been modified so you can flash the eeprom from the flashbios menu in the event you can’t get the xbox to load apps like configmagic. the only drawback is that it has to at least load the flashbios, which i cant get it to do yet.

I see. I thought you were going to try to put flashbios on the EEPROM or something like that. What dashboard was on the Xbox? Was writing to the EEPROM enabled?

i did a "standard" slayers install with evox as the dash. i intentionaly left configmagic 1.6 off the box, so this kinda of thing wouldnt happen. except for the enigma video switcher, i dont think there were any other apps could could write to the eeprom. i am going to completely remove the chip and all connections tonite and see if that does anything if not, im not sure what to try next. he might just be better off buying a used xbox and i transfer everything over.

I know this is really old, but i have the exact same prob with 2 xboxes now (one i modded with the xecuter 3 and the other i had sent to me (looks like the same chip). Any way, The Mcpx chip looks like it might be a pain to change lol, any other ways to check if its that chip or not?

Also a quick note, i do have a heat gun, used to reheat the ram chips for my 360 and replace the eeproms on xbox boards.
