LITEON 9504 Confused about updating FW

Hi everyone, hoping someone can clear the fog in my head!! I'll give a bit of background info which might help....

I bought my Slim about 18 months ago - it has the Lite-on DG-16D4S 9504 drive. It was flashed to what I guess was LT+ V2 at the beginning of May last year.

I've not used Live since then, so as at now I'm still on Dashboard 2.0.12625.0.

I have a CK3 Pro, an X360USB Pro, and Jungleflasher.

I had a go tonight at updating the FW myself, but I'm not sure if I've got the right file to update with?

I understand that with a more recent dashboard update the 9504 changed to a 0272, and I can find an LT+V3.0 .bin file for that drive, but not for the 9504.

I'm guessing that if I updated the dashboard to change the drive version to 0272, it would also Write Protect the drive, so I won't be able to update it!

Can anyone wiser than me please help me out? I've trawled the forums for hours, but don't seem to have found anyone with this dilemma!!

If you're running on LT 2.0 then now your drive no longer 9504 ii's 0272 ...

I'm quite sure you're running on LT 1.1 ..

So if you update your console now ,spi will be locked and you have to do some unlocking process on your PCB or buy a TX unlocked PCB ..

Look at your PCB

If you got MXIC the you need to do Sputnik Hack(buy a sputnik switch or probe and follow this tutorial)
Or If you got Winbond then you need to do Kamikaze Hack(Follow this guide-By RDUBBS007) to unlock your drive !

Or Buy A TX UNLOCKED PCB and follow this tutorial !

I was just coming back on to amend that actually! It was indeed 1.1....

I've found a thread that suggests for LT+v3.0 for the 9504, I should use the 0272 .bin file - not overly convinced about that!

Can you explain in simple terms why I need the Sputnik or the Kamikaze hack? They seem quite serious, when others seem to be able to flash new FW easily?

I know I'll be missing something obvious, but it's not obvious to me right now!!

If you upgrade your console then your drive will be locked ,that is not done by me it done by Microsoft (ask them why they done it)!

Sputnik and kamikaze is a unlock proses for slim drives !

All Lite-On DG14DS Drive need to hardware unlock(Such as Sputnik or Kamikaze) after they locked by Microsoft !

The dash updates lock and flash the drive to 0272. The sputnik and kamikaze unlock the drive allowing firmware to be written to the drive

Cheers cunny, you've been so helpful I didn't want to keep pestering you with dumb questions so thought I'd try find out for myself!!

I take it that you can't update dash without flashing drive then. Do I NEED to update dash? As I've said, not bothered about Live etc,so would be happy just being able to play latest backups...

It seems my idea about simply flashing with LT+ V3.0 compatible fw is a no-go then? How about if I'm not bothered about the drive being locked once I've got the new features loaded on?

If you flash your drive to LT 3.0 without update then you can see some problem as it's not recommended !

1st re-flash your console to stock FW
2nd update your dash to latest FW
3rd Unlock your Drive (Difficult part)
4th Flash Your Drive to LT 3.0

At lot of games now request the dash to be at least 13599 so at some point you will have to do what rock360 says above else you may not be able to play newer games

Flash back to stock (make sure you have a full dump)

Update console over XBL

When you dump flash again you will see its now 0272

Use Sputnik Probe or Switch to flash back to LT 3 (using your X360USB PRO of course) - its easy to sinatll the switch - just a trace cut and 3 small solder points - simple. if you cant do it get someone who can.
