You can have the Xbox hard drive with a external hard drive. You want to ditch the DVD drive and use its Sata port?

If memory serves there was amod for the phats to wire in an hdd in place of the optical drive on jtags but given that you can attach up to 2 HDDs by usb it doesn't seem worth it really

There is a mod like you said to wire a 3.5 inch in place of the optical drive but, for all that work just get an external drive or a very big 2.5 inch.

That said mod involved soldering a sata cable into the points where the normal clip-on harddrive port connects to the motherboard.

Only the new sata port worked, when you tried to clip in an M$ harddrive then it would stop working. You couldnt use two harddrives this way.

i think use a 2,5" hdd in normal place and a 3,5" instead of a dvdplayer (power from dvd power cable, there is 12v)
the question is the dashboard recognizes it?
(a 3,5" 7200rpm hdd in sata is faster than usb, and no need external power)

No need for external power for most 2.5" external usb drives and you'll not notice any discernable speed difference as it would be milliseconds not seconds for most data loading.
