Coolrunner help...

Oops.. after posting in the wrong thread, I thought I better post in a more appropriate place :p

Fitted TX Coolrunner last night to a slim, but the Slim refuses to glitch. Programmed the Coolrunner with Xilinx Lab Tools, and it said programmed and verified ok in 2 seconds.

All wiring seems to be fine.. However the Coolrunner lights up red, and I can hear a faint click every 15 seconds or so from the CPU fan - it doesn't actually stop and start again (no sure if it is supposed to), but the Slim just stays with the front panel LED flashing green (no DVD drive fitted at the moment) and a black screen on the TV.

I've removed the Coolrunner and flashed original NAND back for now.

Any ideas how to get the Coolrunner working or any troubleshooting I can do?

Just to add, I dumped my NAND twice, verified with FC /b and got no differences. Then created the .ecc file and wrote that back to the NAND.

Thanks in advance :)

what did you use to create the ecc file?

You should also have agreen LED that flashes for about a second or so every 4-5 seconds, if it not, then its your wiring, if it is check the CPU_rst connection.

Post some pictures of your installation, I have done 3 slims so far using this board and they all glitch in around 5 seconds.

Also what is the manufucture date of your 360?

Thanks for the reply..

I used Python as per the original RGH instructions to create the ecc file. The output matched the screenshots in the instructions.

There is no flashing green LED on the Coolrunner.

I can resolder it in, but don't want to do it too many times for obvious reasons!

Manufacture date of the Xbox was April 2011 - it has the HANA chip.

I can post pics when I resolder it in - I am beginning to wonder if it programmed correctly - I could only get it to program with the switch in the NOR setting, and the output from Xilinx after programming and verifying was the same as in the RGH screenshots.

Should the CPU fan be stopping and starting? Or just a little click heard?

Thanks for the help!

To be honest with you, i never even noticed the clicking or fans slowing down, but I would image that they would.

the fact that you have no green light indicates that your wiring is at fault, all I can suggest is to find the alternative point and use a multi meter to check for continuity and resistance, I have trouble shooted a few this way, failing that re-soldier the smaller points as it will be most likly one of those, also check that you have not bridged any of them (magnifing glass comes in handy for this)

If i were you I would go over the wiring . When i first started putting these in i had problem after problem after problem . I tried alsorts trying to figure it out and every time it was the wiring . and always one or other of the 2 tiny solder points . Hopefully you are using fine grade kynar wire for these it`s the only way really . They are so small that it`s only got to be a fraction of a mm out and it`s touching another point . If i were you i would look at the 2 small points and also if you have doubts about the chip just re-program it. As sean said a magnifying glass is a MUST , if you try and do it without one chances are you`ll be there all day de-bugging it !

Thanks,

Will give it another whirl tonight - I'm not a novice to soldering (having previously done PS2 24 wire installs many moons ago!).

The only difference in my wiring, was that I used the alternative STBY_CLK point (FT3N2 on the bottom of the board).

I programmed the Coolrunner with a home made LPT programmer which makes me a little wary, but I would presume that the fact it said success and verified ok then it is in fact ok!

Fingers crossed :)

Before I resolder the Coolrunner in, can I just confirm that I have done the steps correctly?

1) Programmed & verified Coolrunner using Xilinx Lab Tools
2) Dumped NAND with NAND-X
3) Dumped NAND again with NAND-X
4) Compared NAND dumps with FC /b and got no differences.
5) Installed Python and set environment variables.
6) Copied Nand dump bin file to root of Reset Glitch Hack folder
7) Created Output folder
8) Ran python command to create a image_00000000.ecc file
9) Wrote the image_00000000.ecc file back to my NAND using +w16
10) installed Coolrunner

I haven't missed a step have I?

Did you program the coolrunner before installing it?

Forgot to say the only thing you should be writing to nand is the newly built nand image created by one of the various tools out there..

Yup, step 1...

I wrote back the ecc file created by the python script.

From my understanding, that's done to fire up Xell and grab the CPU key to then make another NAND - if only I could get to the Xell screen!

I'll give it another whirl later since everything seems to point to wiring..

Isn't FT3N2 an alternate point only for phat consoles?
It's a slim alternative, not phat..

---------- Post added at 10:50 ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 ----------

I've managed to revive my screwed 250Gb slim, (tracks lifted and resistor was missing) so I'll try the Coolrunner in that one and see if I have any better results..

Well I fitted the same Coolrunner to the other slim and get exactly the same result - I'm beginning to suspect my programming of the Coolrunner - I have checked and rechecked the wiring.. No flashing green light, just the power light..

I'll wait for the NAND-X cables and try programming it with that!

No flashing green light = either coolrunner not programmed or your wiring is not correct.

Does your xbox fan go mental at any stage ?
Thanks for the reply Uber,

Nope! It just runs as per normal..

I hear a faint clicking which I thought may be the reset but I ain't convinced!

I have another LPT programmer which hopefully will arrive tomorrow, which I ordered a while ago, but got impatient in the meantime and built one. I may try again once the other one arrives - I have 2 Coolrunners so can try the other one.

I also have a NAND-X and CK3i, but I am reluctant to start soldering to the NAND-X so will wait for cables to be available if I have to go down that route..

I have been wondering if I have managed to do something stupid like program it blank and then obviously it would verify!

GAHHH!

Tried again tonight with new laptop, new LPT cable and reprogrammed the Coolrunner - got the following result :

---------- Post added at 13:10 ---------- Previous post was at 13:09 ----------

Checked it with a utility and got this :-

---------- Post added at 13:11 ---------- Previous post was at 13:10 ----------

Still same problem.. no glitch just red light..

I redid the nand reads, recompared, and this time used multibuild to make the ecc file.

Pics of wiring to follow...
