Might sound stupid, but i had a falcon doing the same sort of thing. It would turn on and play for 10-15 mins and then just shut off. I would then have trouble restarting properly. I triple checked all my solder joints and applied new paste, then done the xclamp fix but it was still doing the same thing. I ended up using a power supply of an old zenon (203w) and bang, worked like a charm. My kids have been playing it non stop for the last 2 months with no problem. I don't know if it will work for you, but it might be worth a shot.

quick update
tried 175w psu and a 203w, no difference.
tried hdmi and component cable still no change.
at this moment it either wont start up or when it finally decideds to start it doesnt stay on long enough to play a game from any location.
it will shut off before dash loaded, or two minutes sat on dash,
tried with no dvd or hdd attached. tried with and all combos. still behaves the same.
regretting the offer to jtag this console for a friend, lol.
bought the nandx etc to do mine, and it all went great. so when my mate asked if i would RGH his i said no problem, looking like i may be out of pocket for a 360 at this rate

yesterday this 360 would not power up, no green lights or fans, other than red light on coolrunner, it was dead.
took it to a friends to remove qsb's to try to diagnose further, but before that i tried to power it up to show him the fault, and hey presto it powered up, tried several times.
powered up every time, boots into freeboot every time, and had it running for 30 mins on two seperate occasions and still no issues.
i know i should be happy its working but i know deep down i havent done anything to fix why it was behaving erratically previously, so i am expecting the random power off to occur any second.
wouldnt be too bad if it was my xbox but it isnt, dont know if i dare give it back to my mate or not.
ill let you know if my shut offs start reoccurring, cant be long now im sure
:-(

remove the qsb and use wire for the connections instead and see if that helps. i had a similar problem with a jtag using qsbs recently. all the solder points on the qsb were still checking fine but something had actually gone wrong with the qsb itsefl.

i put it down to the fact the board will flex when it heats up and if there is a qsb attached and the board flexes independent of that there is the potential for something to become wonky. either a broken solder joint or the qsb becoming damaged even if not visibly.

if you remove the qsb and use the wires and it still gives u the same problem i will be hugely surprised

i have just been playing GOW3 for best part of 2 hours, and the console is running fine, its all reassembled,dvd/hdd attached. i dont want to touch it at the moment, may disturb something. i will have to hope it continues to be ok, and deal with any issues if they arise in the future.
i'd like to thank everyone who commented for their assistance.
it is much appreciated
